If you are waiting for the day you can type more words on Twitter, you don't have to wait anymore. According to Twitter on Wednesday, it is currently testing a new feature that would make this possible. The new feature is called "Notes" which has a word limit of 2,500. According to the company, the move came because users use the platform to post pictures of longer announcements and direct followers outside the platform.
The test is currently going on with a small group of writers in the US, UK, Canada and Ghana and will run for two months. The strategy behind the new feature was to retain users on the Twitter network. For instance, users would stay on the system if they could read headlines within the Twitter ecosystem. That is goodbye to the clicking of links to access news or announcements. The current limit on the micro-blogging platform is 280 characters.
The feature is built into Write, a composer tool that allows writers to create stories and other long-form content. Followers of whoever published with notes would be able to engage him all on Twitter. In addition to the new feature, users or writers in the future will be able to embed gifs, photos and other features into long-form essays readable on or off the Twitter platform. To make things more interesting, the Twitter notes are editable after publishing. Hence, once you publish a piece of news or announcement and need to add information to it, they can.
Twitter is a big social media company used by writers
to share their work. It gets write-ups noticed, creates conversations etc., but
with the new feature, they can write on Twitter too. Notes will to a large
extent, help more writers to get their thoughts out there to their audience. Last year Twitter acquired Revue, a Dutch newsletter
start-up, and the announcement of Note is a way of keeping Revue alive.
The Twitter Note is a strategic move that pushes the
company to compete with other big players in the blogging niche. This is not
the first time Twitter is increasing its character limit. You would recall that
in 2017, the micro blogging platform increased the character limit for tweets
from 140 to 280. The limit was tested then using a small group of users.
Also, it is interesting to know that Twitter is working
on having an edit button on the platform. The company announced this in April
after Mr. Musk asked for the feature. He also used the opportunity to reveal to
users that he has acquired a large stake in Twitter. Elon Musk also mentioned the need for a subscription
model for Twitter, as recently announced by Snapchat. Telegram and others followed the strategy too.
