Lagos State incurs an estimated economic loss of N1 trillion every year as a result of severe traffic congestion that hampers productivity, according to Sola Giwa, the Special Adviser to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Transportation.
Speaking on the alarming state of traffic in Nigeria’s commercial capital, Giwa revealed that Lagos residents spend an average of six hours daily commuting on the city's heavily congested roads. This extended time spent in traffic, he said, significantly reduces overall productivity and contributes to the massive economic losses recorded annually.
“Lagos State suffers an estimated annual economic loss of N1 trillion due to the productivity drain caused by prolonged traffic congestion,” Giwa stated. “Commuters in the state spend an average of six hours daily navigating the city’s clogged roads.”
Traffic congestion in Lagos has long been a major concern for both residents and policymakers. With a population exceeding 20 million people and an ever-growing number of vehicles on the roads, the situation continues to deteriorate, affecting businesses, quality of life, and the state’s economy.
Efforts by the Lagos State Government to tackle traffic gridlock have included road infrastructure development, improved traffic management systems, and promotion of alternative transportation modes such as water transport and rail. However, stakeholders believe that more strategic interventions and public-private partnerships are needed to deliver lasting solutions.
The revelation by Sola Giwa underscores the urgency for comprehensive urban mobility planning and sustainable transport systems in Lagos to reduce traffic-induced economic losses and enhance commuters’ well-being.
