Movie producer, philanthropist, and politician Prince Tonye Princewill has expressed concern over the growing disinterest among Nigerians, especially the youth, in sacrificing for the country.

During an appearance on Arise TV, Princewill remarked that over the years, fewer citizens are willing to make personal sacrifices for Nigeria because they believe the country itself is not willing to do the same for them.

Princewill, who once contested for the governorship seat in Rivers State, noted that patriotism is a fundamental quality he demands from anyone intending to work with him.

“I used to say to them, one of the qualities you need to have to work with me is that you have to be ready to die for Nigeria,” he said during the interview. But he quickly added that since 2007, that number has significantly dwindled.

According to him, the sharp decline in patriotic sentiment among Nigerians stems from the widespread perception that the country’s leaders do not genuinely care about the people. “They see that the country is not prepared to die for them, the leaders are not prepared to die for them,” he said, describing the trend as “very unfortunate.”

Princewill didn’t stop there. He took a swipe at Nigeria’s current political atmosphere, lamenting that it lacks inspiration, vision, and genuine commitment to national progress.

He called the country’s politics “very unfortunate” and described it as something “not to be proud of.” He stressed that the absence of principled and purposeful leadership has left the nation stagnant and discouraged meaningful change.

“We need new blood, fresh blood in the system and we are not getting a lot of that unfortunately,” he stated. For Nigeria to move forward, Princewill insisted that the political space must be opened up to younger, idea-driven individuals who bring clarity, passion, and a sense of direction to governance.

Without such inclusivity, he warned, the system will remain trapped in the same old cycle of failed leadership and broken promises.

He further emphasized the importance of ideology in politics, saying that many of Nigeria’s current leaders operate without clear, guiding principles, which only deepens public mistrust. “I always say politics is too important to be left to politicians,” Princewill asserted, calling for citizens who genuinely love the country to get involved in political processes.

Princewill’s comments come at a time when Nigeria continues to battle insecurity, economic hardship, youth emigration, and declining trust in public institutions.

His remarks reflect a growing sentiment among the populace that patriotism cannot be demanded from citizens without reciprocal responsibility from the state.

His call for fresh leadership echoes what many Nigerians have been demanding  a break from recycled leadership and the introduction of visionary minds who are committed to nation-building.

With the 2027 elections in sight, the conversation around credible leadership and genuine change is expected to intensify. Whether Princewill’s appeal will inspire a new wave of political engagement remains to be seen, but it’s a call that clearly resonates with the frustrations of many.
