Billionaire businessman King Ochacho has disclosed that he made his first N1bn at the age of 21 through a charcoal export business.
Ochacho made the revelation while speaking with Nigerian content creator and streamer Peller during a livestream, where he discussed his early years in business and his subsequent involvement in politics.
According to the businessman, his entrepreneurial journey began with his involvement in the charcoal trade, where he worked as an agent for a company exporting charcoal to Chinese buyers.
He explained that he helped connect the company with Chinese customers and earned dividends from the transactions. Over time, he said, the income he generated from the business reached N1bn.
“I was doing a business called coal business (charcoal), so I got all these Chinese people, and I was an agent to a company to export the coal. So the dividends I got within a period of time for that were one billion,” Ochacho said.
His account highlights how his business activities began at a relatively young age before he later explored other areas, including politics.
Ochacho said he eventually became involved in politics but decided to leave the political space and return his attention to business and his religious commitments.
He explained that his decision was partly influenced by his unwillingness to engage in political rivalry or see political participation as a battle against individuals.
According to him, his interest has always been centred on good governance rather than opposing whoever occupies a political position.
“Then later I joined politics, then again I left politics to serve God and do my business,” he said.
“I am not the type of person who is against anybody. What I want is good governance, so if the person in power can give us everything, I am good. My prayer is to pray for the leader to succeed.”
Ochacho’s comments came during a wider conversation with Peller about his experiences in business, politics and his interactions with influential Nigerians.
During the livestream, Peller asked the businessman whether he had met President Bola Tinubu and other prominent political figures.
Responding, Ochacho said he had interacted with several influential personalities before speaking about his impression of Tinubu.
He described Tinubu as one of the best politicians he had encountered during his lifetime, while stressing that his comments were not intended as a campaign for the President.
Ochacho also praised Tinubu’s political influence and attributed significant political influence to him, claiming that he played a role in the emergence of former President Muhammadu Buhari and other presidents.
“I have seen everybody, and let me tell you something: forget about what is happening, and I’m not here to preach for Tinubu, but Tinubu is one of the best politicians I have seen in my lifetime,” he said.
“He is one of the greatest politicians of all time; forget about all that is happening. He made Buhari President and other presidents.”
His remarks about Tinubu came alongside his explanation of his personal approach to politics. Rather than viewing political participation as an avenue for confrontation, Ochacho said he prefers to support leaders and pray for them to succeed when they are in office.
For him, good governance remains the central issue, regardless of the individual occupying a position of authority.
The businessman’s account of his early success also offered an insight into the unconventional path that preceded his later ventures. Starting as an agent in the charcoal export business, he said his earnings eventually grew to a level that enabled him to record his first billion naira at just 21.
Ochacho has since expanded his interests beyond the business that initially brought him substantial financial success, while also exploring politics before choosing to focus on his businesses and religious commitments.
His conversation with Peller has since drawn attention to his claims about his early business success and his views on leadership, governance and Nigeria’s political landscape.
