Korra Obidi has spoken about how different her life might have been if she had married what she described as a good and kind man.
According to her, even if such a marriage eventually ended in divorce, she believes she would have been spared some of the difficulties she says she has experienced since the end of her marriage.
Korra said she would not have had to deal with people trying to damage her reputation or making serious allegations about her personal life. She also mentioned claims that she had slept with other men while she was pregnant, as well as what she described as efforts to affect her work and prevent her from making money from her social media platforms.
She said:
“Imagine if I had married a good and kind man, even if we divorce, nobody would try and spoil my reputation, nobody would say I slept with men while I was pregnant, nobody would sabotage my work and make sure I am not earning from my social media pages and accuse me of terrorsm.
Imagine I married a good man, nobody would stop my children from traveling with me. If you marry a demon, you will join the queue.”
Korra’s comments also touched on the relationship between marriage and parenting. She brought up the issue of her children travelling with her, suggesting that she believes things would have been easier if she had been married to someone she considered supportive and kind.
For her, the challenges go beyond the end of a relationship. She connected them to her reputation, career and ability to spend time with he children without additional difficulties.
Her choice of words was particuarly direct as she compared what she imagined life would have been like with a good partner to the experience she says she has had. Rather than presenting divorce itself as the biggest problem, Korra focused on what can happen when a relationship breaks down and both sides do not remain on good terms.
She also spoke about her work, saying that efforts to affect her social media income would have made it harder for her to continue building her career. As someone who has built a large part of her public career online, maintaining access to her platforms and being able to earn from her content is an important part of her livelihood.
The issue of her children remains another major part of what she described. Korra said that having a good man as a partner would have meant that nobody would stop her children from travelling with her.
Her statement ultimately came down to the kind of person she believes she should have had beside her during marriage and after it. She suggested that having a supportive partner could make even a difficult situation such as divorce easier to handle.
Korra ended her statement with a blunt warning about choosing a life partner: “If you marry a demon, you will join the queue.”
The remark summed up her point about the difficulties she says can follow when a relationship turns bitter, especially when children, work and personal reputation are involved.
