Afrobeats star David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has revealed how conversations with fellow Nigerian artistes Wizkid and Wande Coal influenced his approach to balancing his education with his growing music career.
Davido made the disclosure while speaking in the Afrobeats Documentary, where he reflected on the early stages of his career and the difficult decision he faced between remaining in school and committing himself fully to music.
The singer recalled seeking advice from Wizkid and Wande Coal after becoming increasingly interested in pursuing music as a full-time career. At the time, he wanted to understand how the two artistes had managed to focus on music while moving away from the conventional educational path.
According to Davido, the advice he received from the two singers was that he needed to establish himself in the music industry before he could convince his family that abandoning school was a viable option.
“I asked Wizkid and Wande Coal how they left school to do music,” Davido said.
“They told me the only way was to blow up. I knew my dad wouldn’t allow me, but when ‘Dami Duro’ blew up, I couldn’t continue.”
Davido explained that his father was particularly opposed to the idea of him abandoning his education to pursue music. He knew that convincing his father would be difficult unless he could demonstrate that his musical ambitions had genuine potential.
However, the success of his hit single ‘Dami Duro’ changed the circumstances surrounding his career.
Released during the early stages of Davido’s rise to prominence, ‘Dami Duro’ became a major song and helped establish the singer as one of the prominent young voices in the Nigerian music scene.
The song’s success also strengthened Davido’s belief that music could become a serious career for him.
Despite his growing popularity, the singer eventually returned to school and continued his education while developing his career in the music industry.
Davido’s return to school came after he reached an understanding with his father, who agreed to support his musical ambitions under certain conditions.
As part of the arrangement, his father agreed to provide him with a recording studio, allowing Davido to continue making music while also fulfilling his educational responsibilities.
The arrangement enabled him to pursue both paths rather than choosing one completely over the other.
Davido’s experience illustrates the challenge he faced in the early years of his career as he tried to satisfy his family’s expectations while pursuing his passion for music.
Although his father initially did not want him to abandon his education, the establishment of a successful music career eventually created room for a compromise.
Rather than permanently leaving school, Davido was able to continue his studies while recording songs, performing and building the foundation for what would later become an internationally recognised career.
The singer eventually completed his education at Babcock University, where he graduated in 2015 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music.
His educational journey has remained an important part of his story, particularly because his career began to take off while he was still pursuing his studies.
Davido has since become one of the most recognised Nigerian artistes internationally, with a career spanning several albums, hit singles and collaborations with artistes from different parts of the world.
Looking back at the period when he was contemplating leaving school, his conversation with Wizkid and Wande Coal appears to have been part of the process that helped him understand the importance of establishing himself before making such a major decision.
The advice he recalled receiving was centred on proving himself through music, something he eventually did after the success of ‘Dami Duro’.
His eventual agreement with his father allowed him to pursue both education and music, ultimately leading to his graduation while he continued building the career that would make him one of Afrobeats’ prominent international figures.
