Celebrity stylist Yolanda Okereke has opened up about the intricate work behind the costumes for the highly anticipated film adaptation of The Secret Lives of Baba Segi’s Wives, produced by EbonyLife Films

Set to premiere in cinemas globally in December 2026, the project is one of Nigeria’s most awaited literary adaptations.

Okereke shared with Nollywire that translating a beloved book to the big screen carries immense responsibility. “It’s not just any story.

Fans already feel deeply connected to the characters,” she said. The original novel by Lola Shoneyin, published in 2010, has been celebrated internationally and translated into several languages.

Its themes of polygamy, family dynamics, and social hierarchy have made it an iconic piece of African literature.

Explaining her approach, Okereke emphasized that her role goes far beyond picking outfits. Each costume is designed to communicate a character’s background, social status, and personality without a single word being spoken.

“Clothing is the first layer of storytelling,” she explained. “The audience should understand a character just by how they appear. Are they reserved or expressive? Affluent or pretending to be? All of that needs to show visually.”

With multiple wives living under one roof, Okereke said the costume design also helps highlight tension and rivalry.

“In a compound with four wives, there’s always drama,” she added. The clothing reflects hierarchy and unspoken conflicts, giving subtle cues to viewers about relationships and power dynamics within the household.

While she kept many details under wraps, Okereke hinted that fans will be pleasantly surprised by the visual storytelling.

The film features a star-studded cast including Odunlade Adekola as Baba Segi, with notable performances by Iyabo Ojo, Mercy Aigbe, Bimbo Ademoye, Omowunmi Dada, Shaffy Bello, Bisola Aiyeola, Lateef Adedimeji, Kunle Remi, Tina Mba, and Daniel Etim Effiong.

Produced in collaboration with Genesis Group, Nile Media Entertainment Group, and Silverbird Group, the adaptation is directed by Daniel Oriahi and adapted for screen by Adze Ugah. Okereke’s vision ensures that the characters’ stories are told through every detail, promising audiences an immersive experience that honors the novel’s legacy while delivering cinematic flair.

As EbonyLife Films returns to big-screen productions after years of streaming-focused projects, anticipation is high for this adaptation, which blends strong storytelling with meticulous visual artistry, capturing the essence of one of Africa’s most celebrated novels.
