Founder of Omega Power Ministries, Chibuzor Gift Chinyere, has publicly apologised after facing backlash over a viral video in which he attempted to find a wife for an autistic man under his care.

The video, which was shared on his Facebook page, sparked widespread criticism online, with many social media users condemning the approach as inappropriate and insensitive. The proposal reportedly included incentives such as accommodation, a salary, and other benefits for any woman willing to marry the man.

Addressing the controversy, the cleric issued an apology, acknowledging that his message may have been misunderstood and could have offended many women.

“I want to apologise to all the ladies who watched the video. I can never degrade any woman… if my comments were seen as degrading, I apologise openly. I am very, very sorry,” he said.

Chinyere explained that his actions were motivated by compassion for the young man, who he said had been abandoned at a young age and requires constant care due to his condition. According to him, the man’s identity and family background remain unknown.

He revealed that the individual had initially been taken to a care facility by the police, but the centre was unable to manage his condition and returned him. Since then, the cleric has assumed responsibility for his care.

“The young man was taken to a motherly home by the police, but they could not cope with his condition and returned him. Since then, I have been the one taking care of him,” he said.

The cleric also noted that the man requires assistance with nearly all daily activities, including feeding, bathing, and maintaining personal hygiene.

“He cannot brush his teeth, bathe, or feed himself. He does not speak and does not understand instructions. I am always concerned about his safety and wellbeing,” he added.

Providing further context, Chinyere stated that his ministry has taken in hundreds of vulnerable children over the years, many of whom have special needs.

“I have more than 500 children who have been left at my gate over the years. Some have disabilities, including autism. I cannot abandon them, and this young man is no exception,” he said.

He explained that previous caregivers assigned to the man struggled to cope with the demands of his condition, which led him to seek a more sustainable, long-term solution.

“I was trying to find a sustainable solution to ensure he is cared for properly. The idea of seeking a partner was intended to provide companionship and support, not to degrade women. I never intended it to be interpreted that way,” he said.

Chinyere also highlighted the support system provided by his ministry, including access to education, medical care, and accommodation for individuals under his care. He maintained that his efforts have always been focused on improving the lives of vulnerable people.

“This young man, like the others, has access to education, medical care, and a caregiver. The intention was always to help him have a better life,” he said.

He further explained that making the appeal public was intended to draw attention to the man’s situation and possibly attract support from well-meaning individuals.

“Making it public was the best way for people to understand the situation and offer help,” he noted.

Concluding his statement, the cleric reiterated his apology and emphasised that his intention was never to offend or disrespect anyone.

“I am truly sorry if my posts offended anyone. My goal is always to care for those who cannot care for themselves,” he said.
