Veteran Nollywood actress Omotola Jalade Ekeinde has opened up about the long-standing controversy surrounding an alleged industry ban that affected her and several top actors at the peak of their careers.
Speaking during a recent interview while promoting her film Mother’s Love, the actress revisited the period when she and other prominent figures in the industry were reportedly sidelined by film marketers. According to her, the situation arose after they began pushing for reforms aimed at improving professionalism and structure within Nollywood.
Omotola explained that their advocacy for better working conditions and industry standards was not well received by some stakeholders, who viewed their actions as disruptive rather than progressive.
“They said we were too troublesome because we were trying to better the industry. They said we were bad influences because we were pushing for standards,” she said.
The actress disclosed that the alleged blacklisting did not affect her alone, as several leading stars at the time were also caught in the fallout. Among those she mentioned were Genevieve Nnaji, Ramsey Nouah, Jim Iyke, Stella Damasus, Richard Mofe-Damijo, and Nkem Owoh.
Despite the tension that followed, Omotola revealed that efforts were later made to resolve the dispute through a reconciliation meeting. However, she chose not to participate in the process, a decision she now confirms was deliberate.
“They called for a reconciliation meeting, and I refused to go,” she stated, without elaborating further on her reasons for declining the invitation.
The actress also addressed long-standing rumours about her relationship with fellow star Genevieve Nnaji. Over the years, speculation has often suggested rivalry or tension between the two, but Omotola dismissed such claims.
According to her, while they may not share a close personal bond, there is no bad blood between them.
“People don’t need to be best friends, but we talk,” she said, downplaying the idea of any feud.
Her comments have once again drawn attention to a controversial chapter in Nollywood’s history, when power struggles between actors and marketers reportedly shaped the direction of the industry. For many observers, the episode also highlighted early efforts by actors to push for greater professionalism in what has since grown into one of the world’s largest film industries.
