South African officials have opened a formal inquiry into the unexpected passing of Nigerian digital creator Odera Nwobu, who died on Sunday after battling complications believed to be linked to severe high blood pressure.
A widely circulated video features his friend, Daddy Billly, giving a detailed account of the events that led up to the tragedy. According to him, Odera experienced a frightening health scare three days before his death, during which his heart began pounding intensely and visibly. He was rushed to a nearby pharmacy, where tests showed his blood pressure had spiked to 171. Pharmacists reportedly warned that any delay could have resulted in a stroke. After receiving immediate treatment and medication, his condition stabilized.
Billly explained that on Sunday, Odera seemed to have missed his prescribed medication, which may have contributed to a sudden deterioration in his condition later in the day. He recalled that Odera complained of unusual fatigue after they walked a short distance, telling them he felt too weak to continue. No one remembered to confirm whether he had taken his medication.
Their day later took them to a club, but after everyone dispersed, they received a distressing call that Odera was unable to move. Billly noted that due to South Africa’s strict emergency protocols, they could not transport him themselves. When paramedics eventually arrived, they pronounced him dead on the scene.
He added that South African law requires an autopsy when a relatively young person dies outside a hospital or without a documented terminal condition. Authorities have therefore ordered a post-mortem examination to determine the precise cause of death, with results expected within a few days.
Responding to unfounded claims circulating online that the incident might be a prank, Billly insisted the reports are true and promised to share the autopsy findings once available.
BBC Pidgin also verified Odera’s passing after speaking with his manager.
