The world of music has been plunged into mourning with the death of reggae icon James Chambers, famously known as Jimmy Cliff.

The celebrated singer and actor passed away on November 24, 2025, due to complications arising from a seizure followed by pneumonia, according to a statement shared on his official social media accounts.

Cliff’s wife shared the news on his official Facebook page, expressing her profound sadness while also appreciating the support from family, friends, colleagues, and fans around the globe.

“It’s with profound sadness that I share that my husband, Jimmy Cliff, has crossed over due to a seizure followed by pneumonia,” she wrote.

She continued, “I am thankful for his family, friends, fellow artists and coworkers who have shared his journey with him.

To all his fans around the world, please know that your support was his strength throughout his whole career. He really appreciated every fan for their love.”

Jimmy Cliff’s career spanned over six decades, making him one of the most influential figures in reggae and world music.

Born in 1948 in Jamaica, Cliff rose to international fame with songs such as The Harder They Come, Many Rivers to Cross, and You Can Get It If You Really Want

His music was not only commercially successful but also socially significant, often addressing themes of struggle, resilience, and empowerment.

Beyond music, Jimmy Cliff also made notable contributions to cinema. He starred in the groundbreaking 1972 film The Harder They Come, which is widely credited with introducing reggae music and Jamaican culture to a global audience.

The film’s soundtrack became a cultural phenomenon and helped cement Cliff’s reputation as an artist who could bridge the gap between music and film, earning him recognition both as a musician and an actor.

Fans and fellow artists have taken to social media to mourn his passing, sharing memories and tributes that celebrate his artistry and enduring influence.

His death comes at a time when the reggae genre faces challenges in maintaining its global prominence, particularly in regions where afrobeat and other contemporary music styles dominate.

Yet, Cliff’s legacy continues to inspire musicians across genres, reminding the world of the power of authentic storytelling through music.

Cliff’s wife also expressed gratitude to the medical staff who cared for him during his final days, acknowledging their support during what she described as “this difficult process.”

She requested privacy for the family during this challenging time and indicated that further information would be shared at a later date.

The passing of Jimmy Cliff is not only a significant loss for reggae enthusiasts but also for the broader music community worldwide.

His contributions to music, film, and culture have left an indelible mark that will be remembered for generations.

Tributes are expected to pour in from fans, fellow musicians, and cultural institutions in the coming days, as the world pays homage to a man whose voice, message, and artistry transcended borders.
