Nigerian musician and activist Folarin Falana, popularly known as Falz, has called for a public hearing to investigate the alleged failure of the Federal Government to adequately equip the Nigerian Armed Forces despite significant annual budget allocations for military ammunition and equipment.
The singer made the appeal on Monday amid growing concerns over national security, describing the current situation in the country as “a national security emergency.”
In a video that has since gone viral, Falz urged every citizen to hold their representatives accountable. He encouraged Nigerians to contact their senators and members of the House of Representatives through emails, phone calls, and WhatsApp messages to demand transparency and answers.
“We need to call for a public hearing, broadcast on live TV, livestream for anybody anywhere in the world to watch,” Falz said.
“So many billions and billions are being budgeted and released for acquisition of arms and ammunition, but what is happening? Why is the military still ill-equipped? Why are military convoys still being ambushed by criminals? Why was an army general murdered on video?”
Falz’s statement highlights the deep frustration many Nigerians feel over repeated security lapses, particularly attacks on military personnel and civilians.
The singer insisted that a public hearing would provide clarity on the nation’s strategy for tackling terrorism, the state of military preparedness, and the steps being taken to protect citizens.
He stressed that Nigerians must demand accountability to ensure that budgeted funds reach the armed forces and are used effectively to curb insecurity.
The musician’s call comes at a time when the nation continues to face rising incidents of attacks on communities, abductions, and violence perpetrated by armed groups.
Falz described the situation as depressing and warned that continued neglect could undermine public trust in the government’s ability to protect its citizens.
He also linked the failure to equip the military with the persistence of attacks, raising questions about the effectiveness of current policies and strategies.
Falz’s plea has sparked discussions across social media platforms, with many users supporting his call for accountability, while others debate the practicality of such hearings.
Civil society organizations have also echoed the importance of ensuring transparency in budget implementation and the protection of military personnel.
The call for a televised, livestreamed public hearing represents a growing demand for openness and citizen engagement in addressing Nigeria’s security challenges.
As the country grapples with recurring violence and insecurity, Falz’s intervention underscores the role of public figures in advocating for reforms and ensuring that citizens’ voices are heard in shaping national policies.
In conclusion, Falz’s appeal for a public hearing is more than just criticism it is a push for accountability, transparency, and active citizen participation in addressing one of Nigeria’s most pressing challenges: national security.
