Popular Nigerian skit maker and comedian, Emmanuel Ejekwu, famously known as Sabinus, has revealed that his father never supported his comedy journey and even refused to bless the career in its early stages.
The comedian made this revelation during a candid interview with media personality, VJ Adams, where he opened up about the challenges he faced while chasing his dreams.
According to Sabinus, his father had always envisioned him becoming a lawyer. Growing up, the comedian explained that his family strongly believed in formal, traditional professions, and comedy was never considered a viable career path.
Sabinus noted that he genuinely tried to meet his father’s expectations by attempting to gain admission into the university to study Law, but after multiple unsuccessful attempts, he settled for Linguistics and Communication Studies at the University of Port Harcourt.
It was during his years at UniPort that he discovered his natural talent for comedy. He began experimenting with skit-making and performing at small shows.
However, he stressed that the journey was far from easy, as the early years came with no financial reward. The comedian revealed that he kept his comedy work hidden from his father throughout his time in school because he knew the older man would disapprove.
After completing his degree, Sabinus continued to pursue comedy while living with his family, still keeping his budding career away from his father. But the secret did not last long.
One year after graduating, his father began seeing his pictures and name on flyers and posters for comedy events, prompting him to confront the comedian’s siblings. According to Sabinus, his sisters confirmed that he had fully ventured into comedy, which reportedly angered their father.
In the interview, Sabinus quoted his father as saying, “Which comedy? Stupid business. Look at the boy I sent to become a lawyer.” The comedian said his father felt deeply disappointed and even regretted investing in his education, believing comedy was a waste of time.
Despite the discouragement, Sabinus remained determined and continued to hone his craft. In his words, he knew comedy was his calling and was ready to push through, with or without family support. His big break eventually came through consistency, social media success, and standout performances that gradually earned him recognition nationwide.
Sabinus revealed that the turning point in his relationship with his father came only after he began earning substantial income from his comedy career.
Once he started gifting his father money and supporting him financially, the older man had a change of heart. The comedian added that his father not only accepted his career choice but eventually gave him his blessings.
Today, Sabinus stands as one of Nigeria’s most successful and influential comedians, with millions of followers across social media platforms and several awards to his name. His story adds to the growing list of Nigerian entertainers who achieved success despite initial family resistance.
