Nigerian-born Beninese international footballer Razak Omotoyossi has passed away at the age of 39, his former Swedish club Helsingborgs IF confirmed on Tuesday, August 19.
In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), the club said, “Helsingborgs IF is in mourning. We have been informed that our former player Razak Omotoyossi has passed away at the age of 39. Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones.”
Omotoyossi began his professional career in the Nigerian league before switching nationality to represent Benin, eventually becoming one of the nation’s most celebrated footballers. He scored 21 goals in 55 international appearances, ranking among Benin’s all-time top scorers.
He is particularly remembered for his outstanding performance in the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, where he scored all four goals in Benin’s 4-1 victory over Togo, finishing the campaign as joint top scorer alongside Samuel Eto’o. Omotoyossi also made history by becoming the first player to score for Benin in the Africa Cup of Nations finals.
Throughout his club career, Omotoyossi played across Africa, Europe, and the Middle East, with stints in South Africa, Libya, Egypt, Syria, Moldova, Sweden, and France. He notably made a mark at Helsingborgs IF in Sweden, appearing in the UEFA Champions League before moving to French side FC Metz.
