Nora Awolowo has made history as the youngest Nigerian cinematographer and producer to lead a Nollywood film past the ₦100 million mark at the box office with Red Circle.
Shot when she was just 24 and now making waves at 26, Awolowo’s journey is a defining moment in the rise of a new generation of Nigerian filmmakers.
Red Circle, a crime thriller directed by Akay Mason and co-produced by Abdul Tijani-Ahmed, was released on June 6 and surged past ₦88 million in under three weeks.
Shortly after, it crossed the ₦100 million threshold an exceptional feat for a non-franchise, original film. The film’s success is not only commercial but cultural, marking a shift in Nollywood’s willingness to embrace younger creatives and daring storytelling.
Awolowo, known for winning the AMVCA 2023 Best Documentary award, emphasized that her intention wasn’t to break records but to create something authentic. “No handouts, just clarity, heart, and a crew that believed,” she said.
The film, produced by Rixel Studios, featured a diverse cast including Tobi Bakre, Omowunmi Dada, Lateef Adedimeji, Bukky Wright, and Mr Macaroni. Its marketing campaign, driven by skits and teaser drops, helped it stand out in a crowded release window. The result was not just a box office win, but a statement.
Now playing in select UK cinemas, Red Circle is also heading for a North American release, further proving its global appeal. With a team made up largely of under-30 talents, the project exemplifies what’s possible when young voices are given space to lead.
Awolowo’s achievement isn’t just a personal milestone it’s a signal that Nollywood’s future belongs to a new class of creators telling stories on their own terms, with vision and precision.
