The Nigerian box office has witnessed an exciting first half of 2025, with a diverse lineup of films ranging from high-octane comedies to powerful epics and socially conscious dramas.
Leading the charge is Everybody Loves Jenifa, which has officially become Nollywood’s highest-grossing film of all time, raking in ₦758.6 million and selling over 148,000 tickets. The Funke Akindele-directed film continues the beloved Jenifa saga, combining slapstick comedy with suspense and real-world issues, making it a perfect crowd-pleaser.
Following closely is Ori: The Rebirth, a spiritually rich, folklore-infused drama written by Muyiwa Ademola. The film explores identity, trauma, and ancestral power, earning over ₦410 million and solidifying its status as a Yoruba-language blockbuster.
Reel Love, a modern-day romcom featuring Timini Egbuson and Atlanta Bridget Johnson, impressed younger audiences with its social media-influencer narrative and earned ₦356.8 million.
Also making waves is Alakada:Bad & Boujee, Toyin Abraham’s satirical take on the pressures of social media and fake luxury lifestyles. The Gen Z-focused comedy grossed ₦270.1 million. In the same feminist vein, Iyalode delivered regal drama with Toyin Abraham portraying a powerful female leader in a patriarchal kingdom. It amassed ₦266.4 million.
Labake Olododo, directed by Biodun Stephen, told the story of a woman defying tradition and patriarchy in a Yoruba setting, earning ₦264.3 million.
Comedy met crime in Owambe Thieves, where a couple's desperate party heist turns into chaos, bringing in ₦205.6 million.
Ayo Makun’s The Waiter, a political dramedy, cleverly blended satire and scandal, pulling in ₦178.7 million.
Red Circle, an investigative thriller headlined by Folu Storms and produced by young filmmaker Nora Awolowo, grossed ₦102 million and marked a new era for female-led storytelling in Nollywood.
Finally, My Mother is a Witch offered emotional depth wrapped in mysticism, as a woman returns home to confront childhood trauma and rumors of witchcraft involving her mother. With a ₦94.4 million haul, it proved that emotionally grounded narratives still resonate deeply.
As we enter the second half of 2025, all eyes are on what new stories will challenge Everybody Loves Jenifa’s throne. With rising talents, seasoned veterans, and fearless storytelling, Nollywood is poised to continue shattering its own records.
