U.S. President Donald Trump sparked fresh conversation online Saturday morning after sharing an AI-generated image depicting himself dressed as the Pope.

The image, posted to his social media platform Truth Social, quickly gained traction, racking up more than 12,000 reactions. In a move that surprised many, the White House’s official X (formerly Twitter) account also reshared the image, adding to its viral reach.

The post comes in the wake of the death of Pope Francis (Francis Bergoglio) on April 21, 2025, following a long illness. With the Catholic Church preparing for a conclave to elect a new Pope, the timing of Trump’s post drew particular attention.

The papal conclave is scheduled to begin on May 7. Only cardinals under the age of 80 are allowed to vote, with 135 electors eligible out of a total of more than 252 cardinals.

Speaking to reporters recently, President Trump joked about the possibility of becoming the next Pope. “I would like to be Pope. That would be my number one choice,” he said.

When asked to elaborate, Trump added that he had “no preference” on who should be chosen, but suggested a New York-based cardinal could be a strong pick.
