Renowned Nollywood actress-turned-politician, Funke Akindele, has opened up about her political journey and confirmed she intends to run for office again despite her initial loss.

Akindele was the deputy governorship candidate for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Lagos State during the 2023 general elections. She ran alongside Abdulazeez Adediran, popularly known as Jandor, but the duo was defeated by incumbent Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Following the election, Akindele removed all political content from her social media platforms and had since remained quiet about her political ambitions — until now.

Speaking during the first live edition of the ‘WithChude’ podcast, the filmmaker broke her silence and revealed that her experience has not discouraged her, but rather, strengthened her resolve to serve the people.

“I need to support. I need to give back. That’s why I went into politics,” she said.

Reflecting on the challenges she faced, including political tension and street-level aggression, Akindele said she found strength by observing the composure and influence of experienced female politicians.

“Getting into it, seeing violence, and shouting, then I started watching female politicians like Mummy Abike Dabiri and co. The way they speak, and command respect and authority. I’m like, you too go, you can do it,” she said.

The actress noted that the political space taught her resilience and self-confidence. “I learnt that from there that you have to be bold, courageous, and strong. What would be would be. Fear will only put you in a place,” she added.

According to her, engaging in politics expanded her knowledge of governance and improved her ability to speak with facts and figures.

“I got educated more and acquired more knowledge. You know, I’m reading more and knowing more about my country and my state. When I want to speak, I speak with statistics data,” she explained.

When asked if she would consider another run for office, her response was unequivocal: “Oh, yes.”
