Prominent businessman and socialite, Emeka Okonkwo, widely known as E-Money, has issued a cautionary message to Nigerians, advising against the spraying of Naira or other currencies at social gatherings.

In a statement shared via his Instagram account on Thursday, E-Money highlighted that such practices are prohibited by law and could attract legal consequences. He referenced the position of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), which has repeatedly warned against the abuse of currency during celebrations.

“Let’s celebrate responsibly and avoid fines. Respect our currency!” E-Money urged.

He further advised those wishing to give money at events to do so in a respectful manner: “If you must give money at a party, make sure you put it in a basket or in a bowl or container in front of the person at the party. Don’t drop any currency on the floor,” he said, adding that “ignorance of the law will not be accepted as an excuse.”

E-Money’s remarks follow reports that he was recently invited by the EFCC for questioning in connection with alleged mishandling of both Naira and U.S. Dollar notes at public functions.

The anti-graft agency has intensified its clampdown on individuals caught on camera spraying or mutilating currency, emphasizing that such acts are criminal under Nigerian law.

The EFCC has continued to reiterate its stance on preserving the sanctity of the Naira and discouraging practices that demean the national currency at social events.
