Jamaican reggae legend Buju Banton recently disclosed his Igbo heritage during an appearance on the Drink Champs podcast, co-hosted by N.O.R.E and DJ EFN.

The iconic musician shared that his tribe, the Maroons, originated from the Igbo tribe of Nigeria, highlighting his deep ancestral connections to West Africa.

Buju Banton, known for his powerful music and advocacy, expressed concern over the current situation in Jamaica, where he claims the government is threatening the Maroons' Indigenous land.

He lamented that the Jamaican government is bringing in Chinese and other foreign nationals to the Cockpit region, a sacred area for the Maroons, with the intent to displace them.

"Our Indigenous way of life and our land are being threatened by the current government of Jamaica which seeks to bring Chinese and other nationalities into the Cockpit region, which is an Indigenous sacred region, to usurp us, the Maroons, as the warriors," Banton stated.

He elaborated on the rich history of the Maroons, describing them as relentless warriors who fought against British colonial forces. "Maroons are some of the Indigenous warriors on my Island. We fought the British relentlessly. We are called Blackmaroons. My generation originated from Nigeria. I am an Igbo man according to my bloodline," Banton revealed.
