Afrobeats star Stanley Omah Didia, widely known as Omah Lay, has opened up about how his brief imprisonment in Uganda had a profound effect on his life and career.
The Nigerian singer, along with fellow artist Tems, was arrested and detained in Uganda in December 2020 after performing at a concert at Speke Resort, Kampala, which violated the country's COVID-19 social distancing regulations at the time.

The pair spent three days in jail before being granted bail, an experience that Omah Lay says significantly altered his perspective on freedom.
In a recent interview with Amazon Music, Omah Lay shared how the ordeal deepened his appreciation for freedom, a theme that has since influenced his music.
"After being in that cell for three days, I just love my freedom so much now that I fight for it with every record… I don’t want to give Uganda so much credit for locking me up, but that shifted my perspective about freedom," Omah Lay explained.
The "Soso" crooner highlighted how the experience has made him more passionate about expressing his love for freedom through his music, a sentiment that resonates throughout his songs.
