Again, Tope Alabi in hot waters over the use of ‘iyalaya’ slang

Renowned Nigerian gospel singer, Tope Alabi, is facing intense criticism and scrutiny following the circulation of a video capturing a part of her ministration.

In the video, Tope Alabi is observed using the term 'iyalaya' while apparently paying homage to veteran gospel singer Bola Are. She clarified that she views Mama as an elder figure in the industry, just as she is an elder to some others. The use of 'iyalaya,' a term associated with street slang, raised eyebrows.

Tope passionately urged her audience to acknowledge Bola Are's expertise and creativity, emphasizing the veteran gospel singer's deserving of honor.

Speaking in Yoruba, Tope remarked, "If you see Mummy Bola Are and I'm there, all you need to do is to face me and say that is your 'iyalaya.' I know she is my 'Iyalaya,' and any young artist who does not recognize me as her 'iyalaya' is on her own."

The video prompted various reactions, with teeto_olayemi expressing embarrassment at such instances and suggesting that Tope should simply minister and move on.

@nikelgrace, reacting with a touch of sarcasm, thanked God for salvation and referred to Tope Alabi as a thug.

@Sohigh_xy commented on the use of 'iyalaya' as an abuse in Yoruba, while @ato_ayinke defended Tope's actions, stating that she was only seeking the rightful honor for Bola Are and highlighting the need to appreciate those deserving of it.

This is not the first time Tope Alabi has been involved in viral video controversies. In a previous incident, she used the term 'aboru aboye,' leading to traditional worshippers asking her to identify with them. Her criticism of Adeyinka Alaseyori's gospel song 'Oniduro Mi' in June 2021 also sparked fierce debates on social media.

Tope Alabi's diverse public actions, from dancing 'gbese' at her father's burial to her vocal critiques of certain gospel songs, have stirred controversy and drawn mixed reactions from the public.

Some argue that she has strayed from the path of the Lord, citing concerns about her lifestyle, ungodly dressing, and the influence of money over the Holy Spirit in her life.
