Nigerian actor Yul Edochie has questioned why some people find it difficult to put their phones away during church services, saying that worshippers should be able to give their attention to God without distractions.
The actor pointed out that it is becoming common to see people pressing their phones while mass or church service is going on. He questioned why anyone would struggle to stay away from their device for just an hour while in a place of worship.
According to him, the way people handle their phones in church is worth reconsidering, especially when compared with how they behave when meeting important people.
Yul noted that some people are perfectly comfortable surrendering their phones for hours when they have an appointment with a governor or president. However, when it comes to spending time in church, putting the phone aside for the duration of a service can suddenly become difficult.
He believes this raises a question about the attention people give to their faith and the respect they show while worshipping.
In his words:
“It’s sad seeing people who go to church and be pressing their phones inside the church while mass or service is going on. You mean you can’t stay off your phone for an hour in respect to God? If you go to see a Governor or President, your phones will be taken from you for hours and you’ll be ok with it. But while you’re in the presence of our Creator, you can’t put off your phone and listen to His word? Really sad.”
His message centres on the importance of giving church services proper attention rather than allowing phone notifications, messages and other activities to take over the time meant for worship.
For many people, mobile phones have become part of everyday life, making it difficult to stay away from them even for short periods. However, Yul's point is that attending church should mean taking a break from those distractions and focusing on the reason for being there.
His comparison with meetings involving political leaders also highlights how people can adjust their behaviour when they consider a situation important enough.
Ultimately, his message is a reminder to worshippers to be more conscious of how they spend their time during church services and whether their phones are taking their attention away from listening to God's word.
