Nigerian gospel singer Yinka Alaseyori has sparked speculation about a possible reconciliation with veteran singer Tope Alabi after publicly celebrating her birthday, years after their disagreement over a popular gospel song.
Alaseyori’s birthday message to the older singer has attracted attention from fans, many of whom had called on the two gospel ministers to settle their differences following their highly publicised disagreement in 2021.
The singer shared a photograph of Alabi on Instagram on Tuesday evening, accompanying it with a message wishing her well as she marked another year.
“Happy birthday Ma L/Evang @tope_alabi_ and congratulations on your new age.
“Sufficient grace, strength and mercy we pray for you, ma. Best of God this day and beyond ma,” Alaseyori wrote.
Although the message did not explicitly address their past disagreement, the public gesture has raised hopes among fans that the relationship between the two singers may be improving.
The development comes after years of limited public interaction between the gospel artistes, whose disagreement generated considerable discussion within the Christian community and on social media.
The controversy began in June 2021 when Alabi publicly expressed reservations about Alaseyori’s hit song, Oniduro Mi, a Yoruba phrase that translates to “My Guarantor”.
The song, which gained widespread popularity among gospel music lovers, describes God as a guarantor. However, Alabi questioned the appropriateness of using the term to describe God, arguing that the Almighty’s power and authority go beyond the role of a guarantor.
Her comments quickly became a subject of debate, with many social media users criticising her position and defending Alaseyori’s song.
Some Christians accused Alabi of jealousy, while others weighed in on the theological meaning of the expression and whether it was appropriate in gospel music.
The incident placed both singers at the centre of an intense online discussion, with fans expressing different opinions about Alabi’s remarks and Alaseyori’s musical expression.
In the years that followed, observers noticed a lack of visible interaction between the two artistes on social media. They reportedly stopped publicly celebrating one another on special occasions and were no longer frequently seen together at public events.
Their absence from each other’s social media comment sections also fuelled speculation that the disagreement had affected their relationship.
Despite the passage of time, fans continued to express hopes that the singers would resolve their differences and restore a cordial relationship.
Alaseyori’s birthday message has now renewed those calls, with her decision to celebrate Alabi publicly interpreted by some observers as a possible step towards reconciliation.
However, neither singer has been reported as explicitly confirming that they have formally settled their differences. As a result, the birthday tribute alone does not establish whether a private reconciliation has taken place.
The development nevertheless highlights the attention that public disagreements between prominent gospel musicians can attract, particularly when their music and statements are closely followed by Christian audiences.
Both singers have established themselves in Nigeria’s gospel music scene, earning recognition among listeners through their musical ministries. Their work has also contributed to conversations about worship, Christian expression and the interpretation of religious messages through music.
For fans who have followed the disagreement since 2021, Alaseyori’s message represents a potentially encouraging development after years without an obvious public gesture of goodwill between the two women.
Whether the birthday tribute marks the beginning of a renewed relationship or simply an expression of respect for a fellow gospel minister remains unclear. Nevertheless, the message has brought the long-running controversy back into public conversation and revived hopes that the singers may eventually put the past behind them.
