Veteran Nigerian filmmaker Tunde Kelani has made one of his acclaimed works available to a new generation of viewers, releasing a remastered version of his 2007 movie, The Narrow Path, on YouTube.
The filmmaker announced the development on Wednesday, revealing that the classic is now available through his TK ÒPÓMÚLÉRÓ YouTube channel.
The release forms part of his effort to preserve and make some of his notable films more accessible to audiences online.
The Narrow Path tells the story of Awẹro and Odejimi, whose relationship becomes entangled in a conflict involving tradition, love and expectations from their respective communities.
At the heart of the movie is the pressure created by a cultural practice surrounding virginity testing. Through the experiences of its central characters, the film examines how traditional beliefs can influence relationships, marriage and the choices available to young people.
Kelani directed and produced the movie, while Niji Akanni handled the screenplay. The film was adapted from Bayo Adebowale’s novel, The Virgin, bringing another work of Nigerian literature to the screen through Kelani’s distinctive filmmaking style.
The production was filmed in 2006 in Ichede Village in the Republic of Benin. Its cast includes Sola Àṣẹdeko, who played Awẹro, and Seyi Fasuyi as Odejimi. Other actors featured in the project include Joke Muyiwa, Eniola Olaniyan, Olu Okekanye, Ayo Badmus, Segun Adefila, Bukky Wright, Khabirat Kafidipe and Toyin Onomor.
In announcing the YouTube release, Kelani celebrated the cast and other talents who contributed to the production.
He also encouraged viewers who watched the movie when it was first released to revisit it and share their thoughts, while inviting younger audiences to discover the story for the first time.
The remastered edition also reflects a broader move by the filmmaker to bring older Nigerian cinema to digital platforms. By placing his classic productions online, Kelani is helping preserve films that might otherwise become difficult for younger audiences to access.
The Narrow Path joins other works from Kelani’s filmmaking catalogue that continue to attract interest years after their original release. His productions are widely recognised for combining Nigerian culture, literature, history and social issues with cinema.
The YouTube availability therefore gives longtime fans an opportunity to revisit the 2007 film while allowing a fresh audience to experience a story that explores the tension between personal choices and deeply rooted cultural expectations.
For viewers interested in Nigerian classics, the remastered release provides another opportunity to reconnect with one of Kelani’s notable works and the performers who brought its characters to life.
