Pastor Kingsley Okonkwo has addressed questions surrounding his decision to have a tattoo, explaining that he does not see the practice as something that automatically conflicts with his Christian faith or work as a preacher.

Speaking during an interview on TVC, Okonkwo pointed to the long history of tattoos in human societies and argued that the practice is not something that began in modern times.

For him, having a tattoo does not prevent someone from preaching, serving in the church or speaking about matters of faith. He said his experience has also included working in churches where pastors who had tattoos were present.

“Tattoos have always been part of human culture… There’s no scripture that says getting a tattoo is a sin. Tattoo has always being part of human culture and nature. I'm a motivation preacher who had preached in motivational churches that the pastors also have tattoos. So, I don’t know what was the social media drama was all about because I had a tattoo", he said.

His position comes against the backdrop of the biblical passage in Leviticus 19:28, which directly mentions tattoo marks.

While the passage specifically mentions putting tattoo marks on the body, Okonkwo maintains that there is no scripture that explicitly describes getting a tattoo as a sin.

His argument is that the presence of a tattoo should not, by itself, be used to determine whether someone can preach or be regarded as a person of faith. He also drew attention to the fact that tattoos have existed across different cultures and communities for generations.

Okonkwo's comments therefore focus less on the appearance of the tattoo itself and more on the question of whether having one should be treated as a direct contradiction of scripture.

For the pastor, the issue is straightforward: he has a tattoo, he has continued his work as a preacher, and he does not believe the tattoo makes his faith or ministry invalid.

His explanation also separates the biblical reference to tattoo marks from his interpretation of what constitutes sin. While Leviticus contains a direct instruction concerning tattoo marks, Okonkwo continues to argue that scripture does not expressly state that every person who gets a tattoo has committed a sin.

“I don’t know what was the social media drama was all about because I had a tattoo,” he said.

Making it clear that he does not consider the presence of a tattoo on his body something that should overshadow his work or message as a preacher.
