Primate Elijah Ayodele has urged Nigerians to look beyond the bags of rice being distributed by the All Progressives Congress (APC), warning that accepting such items should not become a reason to support the party during elections.

The clergyman’s message centres on the difference between temporary assistance and the longer-term consequences of political choices. He cautioned Nigerians against allowing food items received during political activities to determine who they vote for.

According to Ayodele, the rice may provide immediate relief to families who are struggling, but he believes Nigerians should not allow that short-term benefit to influence their decision at the ballot box.

He also warned that the economic difficulties being experienced by many households could become more serious, insisting that Nigerians have not yet seen the worst of what may come.

“Real Hunger is still coming to Nigeria, you’ve not seen anything, APC have brought hunger to Kpa! Nigerians. The rice you’re collecting from them will bring more hunger, depression and troubles. Stop collecting rice.”

His warning comes at a time when food prices and the cost of basic necessities remain major concerns for households across the country. For many families, assistance in the form of food can offer some immediate relief, especially when household income is under pressure.

However, Ayodele’s argument is that such relief should not be confused with the responsibility of voters to make their own political choices based on what they believe will serve their interests beyond the immediate moment.

The cleric is therefore asking Nigerians to separate what they receive during political campaigns from how they decide to vote. In his view, collecting rice should not automatically translate into giving political support to the party distributing it.

His comments also touch on a familiar issue in Nigerian politics, where political parties and candidates sometimes distribute food, cash or other items to supporters and residents during campaigns and political gatherings.

For Ayodele, the bigger concern is what happens after the food has been consumed and the immediate assistance is gone. He is warning Nigerians to pay attention to the broader economic situation rather than allowing a temporary benefit to determine their choice at the polls.

The message is particularly directed at voters who may be facing financial difficulties and could be tempted to see campaign handouts as an opportunity that should be repaid with their votes.

Ayodele’s position is that Nigerians can accept assistance if they choose, but should not regard it as a commitment to vote for the party behind the distribution.

His warning ultimately places the focus on the ballot box, telling Nigerians not to allow a bag of rice received during a political campaign to determine a decision that could have consequences beyond the immediate period.

For the clergyman, the bigger issue is the hardship Nigerians may continue to face after the campaign season, which is why he wants voters to think beyond the temporary relief offered during political activities.
