Colombian music star Shakira and her former partner, retired Spanish footballer Gerard Pique, have returned to court in Barcelona as they seek to review the visitation arrangements for their two sons.

The former couple appeared before the court on Tuesday amid discussions over the amount of travel their children undertake between the United States and Spain.

Shakira is seeking adjustments to the existing arrangement, with particular concern over the frequent trips her sons make between Miami, where they live with her, and Barcelona, where Pique is based.

According to the singer’s legal representatives, the request is not about preventing Pique from spending time with his children. Instead, they said Shakira wants to reduce the number of short trips the boys make across the Atlantic.

Her legal team argued that the repeated journeys could affect the children’s emotional wellbeing, physical health and education.

Under the proposal put forward by Shakira’s representatives, Pique would travel to Miami to see his sons during shorter school breaks rather than having the children frequently travel to Barcelona.

The proposed arrangement would allow the boys to remain in their home environment while maintaining their regular routines, particularly during periods when they have shorter breaks from school.

Shakira’s representatives also stressed that the request should not be interpreted as an attempt to reduce the time Pique spends with his children.

The singer, 49, and Pique, 39, began their relationship in 2011. They later welcomed two sons, Milan, born in 2013, and Sasha, born in 2015.

For much of their relationship, the family lived in Barcelona. However, the couple announced their separation in June 2022 after more than a decade together.

Following their split, Shakira and Pique eventually reached an agreement covering custody and visitation arrangements for their children.

Shakira later moved to Miami with the boys, while Pique continued living in Barcelona.

Despite the distance between the former couple, Pique has continued to maintain contact with his sons under their existing arrangement.

His current visitation schedule allows him to spend periods with the children each month, in addition to spending time with them during school holidays.

The latest court proceedings therefore focus on how that arrangement can be adjusted to reduce the amount of international travel required of Milan and Sasha without affecting their relationship with their father.

The issue comes at a time when Shakira is also managing an extensive international music schedule.

The singer is currently in Madrid for the final stage of her global Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran tour. She has 13 concerts scheduled in the Spanish capital between September 18 and October 12, with an additional performance added on Monday.

Shakira launched the tour in February 2025, taking its name from her album of the same title.

The album features Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 53, her highly successful collaboration with Argentine music producer Bizarrap.

The song attracted significant attention following its release because of its references to Shakira’s highly publicised separation from Pique.

The former couple’s latest appearance in court comes as they continue to navigate their responsibilities as parents while living in different countries.

At the heart of the dispute is the practical challenge of maintaining the existing visitation arrangement while limiting the amount of long-distance travel undertaken by the children.

Shakira’s proposal would see Pique make more of the shorter trips to Miami, allowing the boys to stay in their familiar surroundings and continue with their established routines.

The court proceedings will determine how the visitation arrangement should be handled as the former couple continue to co-parent their two sons from opposite sides of the Atlantic.
