Nollywood actress Laide Bakare has appealed to her former husband to allow her to have custody of their two sons, saying she is deeply concerned about their welfare while they remain with their stepmother.
Bakare made the appeal in a video posted on Instagram, where she spoke publicly about an ongoing custody disagreement with her former husband and explained why she had decided to bring the matter to the attention of the public.
The actress said she had initially wanted to handle the issue privately but was forced to speak out after becoming increasingly worried about what could happen to her children.
According to Bakare, the disagreement over custody started following her separation from her former husband. She alleged that he has restricted the amount of time she is allowed to spend with their two sons, a situation she said has left her unhappy and concerned.
She also made serious allegations against the children’s stepmother, claiming that the woman has not treated the boys properly.
Bakare recounted an incident which she said particularly alarmed her. She alleged that she overheard her former husband’s wife speaking to some boys and instructing them on how to physically assault her children.
According to the actress, the woman allegedly warned them not to beat the children in places where injuries or scars would be easily noticed. Bakare claimed that she was instead instructed to have the boys strangled.
She said she recorded the conversation and kept the recording as evidence.
“I’m currently not thinking straight. People say you shouldn’t take your problems to the public or social media, but when it gets scary and threatening, one has to speak out,” she said.
Bakare explained that the disagreement with her former husband was one of the reasons their relationship ended, adding that their current dispute has centred on where and with whom their children should stay.
“My baby’s father and I don’t agree on some issues, which is why we separated. But now we are having issues with the custody of our children. He doesn’t want them to be with me as much as I want, and I’m not happy about it,” she added.
The actress said her greatest concern was leaving the boys in the care of their stepmother, whom she accused of behaving differently when she was not present.
“My worry now is about the boys being with another wife who isn’t treating them well,” Bakare said.
She further alleged that she had complained to her former husband several times about her concerns but claimed that he had failed to take action.
Bakare described the stepmother as someone who, in her view, presents a different personality whenever she is around, alleging that the woman behaves pleasantly in her presence but becomes hostile towards the children when she is away.
The actress also raised another issue involving the children’s passports. She alleged that her former husband had prevented her from renewing the boys’ passports, which she said had made it difficult for her to take them to the United States or have them live with her.
“My baby’s father has also refused to allow me to renew their passports so I can send them to America or bring them to live with me,” she said.
Bakare therefore appealed to the public to help persuade her former husband to grant her custody of their sons.
“So please, help me appeal to my children’s father to give me custody of my boys,” she added.
The actress also asked members of the public for advice on how best to approach the custody dispute while ensuring that the interests and welfare of the children remain protected.
As of the time of the report, Bakare’s former husband had not publicly responded to the allegations.
Bakare, 45, was previously married to Olumide Okunfulure, an American-based businessman from Ondo State. Their marriage produced a daughter, Simi.
She later married Mutairu Orilowo, with whom she has two sons. Details surrounding the end of their marriage to Orilowo have largely remained private.
