Mayorkun has taken a trip back to the early days of his rise in the Nigerian music industry, recalling a private conversation with Davido that gave him a different perspective on what comes with fame.
For a young artiste suddenly finding himself surrounded by attention, money, women and a completely different lifestyle, it was easy to get carried away. Mayorkun said Davido noticed that happening with him and decided to have a word with him before he got too comfortable with the attention.
It was not presented as some long lecture or complicated conversation. Davido simply pulled him aside and told him to calm down.
Mayorkun remembered the moment this way:
“He told me about women. He noticed how excited I was getting, so he called me aside and said, ‘Calm down. You see all these baddies? You will see them again o, but you will see them moving with the newer artistes who are at the height of their careers. So calm down.’ Thank God I took the advice, because I saw it o.”
Looking back, the advice was less about the women themselves and more about understanding how quickly things can change when you become famous.
At the beginning of a successful run, an artiste can easily feel like the attention will last forever. The people around them can also make that new lifestyle seem like the normal way things are supposed to be. But the entertainment industry is constantly changing. New songs come out, new artistes arrive and the attention moves from one person to another.
That was the point Davido appeared to be making to Mayorkun.
Instead of allowing the excitement of the moment to take over, he encouraged him to keep his head straight and understand that fame has its own cycle. What feels exclusive today may become ordinary tomorrow, and the people chasing one star today may be around another star a few years later.
Mayorkun eventually saw exactly what Davido was talking about.
For him, the interesting part of the story is that the advice came at a time when he was still adjusting to the reality of being a successful artiste. Having someone who had already experienced the highs and distractions of the industry could give him a clearer view of what was happening around him.
Davido had already spent years navigating the attention that comes with being one of Africa’s biggest music stars, so his warning came from experience.
Mayorkun's story also shows that some of the most useful advice in the entertainment business does not necessarily come during formal meetings or serious conversations. Sometimes, it is simply a senior artiste pulling a younger colleague aside and telling him not to lose himself in the excitement.
In Mayorkun's case, he listened.
And with time, he realised why Davido had told him to calm down.
