17 Days After Saying “I Do,” NAF Pilot Dies In Ondo Aircraft Crash
What should have been the beginning of a new chapter for Squadron Leader Ahamefule Aham Man-Ugwueje has ended in tragedy, following the crash of a Nigerian Air Force aircraft in Ondo State.
Man-Ugwueje, a pilot with the Nigerian Air Force, was among the crew members aboard an ATR-42 aircraft identified by its registration number, NAF 931, which crashed in the Igbokoda area of Ilaje Local Government Area, Ondo State, on Monday.
The incident occurred barely 17 days after the pilot got married to his colleague, Flight Lieutenant Damilola Adekunle.
The couple exchanged marital vows in Abuja on September 19, 2026, marking what was expected to be the start of their life together as husband and wife. However, that moment of celebration has now been overshadowed by the devastating loss of Man-Ugwueje.
According to reports surrounding the incident, the Nigerian Air Force aircraft was carrying out a routine operational mission when tragedy struck.
The ATR-42 had departed Benin City in Edo State and was heading towards Lagos when communication with the aircraft was reportedly lost at approximately 9:13 a.m.
Efforts to establish contact with the aircraft were followed by the discovery that it had crashed in a swampy location around Igbokoda, opposite a Naval Base.
The difficult terrain of the crash site added another layer of complexity to the response operation as authorities moved to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and account for those onboard.
Man-Ugwueje's death has brought particular attention to the personal dimension of the tragedy. His passing came less than three weeks after his wedding, making the incident especially heartbreaking for his wife, family members, colleagues and friends.
The crash has also sent shockwaves through the Nigerian Air Force community, where military personnel routinely undertake demanding assignments as part of their duties.
While investigations are expected to provide further details about what caused the aircraft to go down, the immediate aftermath has been marked by grief over the loss of the crew members.
For the family of Squadron Leader Man-Ugwueje, the joy of a recent wedding has been abruptly replaced by mourning. The photographs, memories and celebrations surrounding September 19 now stand in stark contrast to the tragedy that unfolded just days later.
The incident serves as another painful reminder of the risks associated with military aviation and the sacrifices made by personnel carrying out official duties.
As authorities continue efforts to establish the full circumstances surrounding the crash, condolences are expected to pour in for the families and colleagues of those who lost their lives.
For Man-Ugwueje's loved ones, however, the tragedy is deeply personal: a marriage that had only just begun has been confronted with an unimaginable loss barely 17 days after the wedding ceremony.
