Former Director-General of the Bureau of Public Service Reforms, Joe Abah, has advised married men to be careful about the information they bring into their marriages, particularly when it involves negative comments from their relatives about their wives.
In a post on X, Abah explained that husbands should not feel compelled to tell their wives every unkind thing said about them by their sisters or other family members. Instead, he believes men should address such behaviour directly and protect their marriages from unnecessary tension.
He wrote:
"It Is Unwise To Tell Your Wife Any Uncomplimentary Thing That Your Sister Or Family Member Says About Her. The animosity Will Never End. Be A Man And Correct Your Sister Or Family Member And Protect Your Wife, But She Doesn’t Need To Know."
His advice centres on how couples handle disagreements involving extended family members. For many married people, maintaining a peaceful relationship with a spouse while staying on good terms with relatives can sometimes be difficult, especially when one party feels disrespected.
When a husband repeats an offensive remark made by his sister or another relative, his wife may understandably feel hurt. Even if the husband did not make the comment himself, hearing it from him could change how she sees that relative and affect their relationship for a long time.
Abah's position is that husbands should take responsibility for addressing such situations rather than simply passing the hurtful words along. If a family member crosses a line, he believes the man should speak up and make it clear that disrespect towards his wife is unacceptable.
His advice also raises a question about the role husbands play in maintaining boundaries between their marriages and their extended families. Getting married does not mean abandoning one's parents, siblings or other relatives. However, it does require recognising that a spouse deserves respect and should not be left to deal with hostility from the family alone.
There is also a difference between repeating an insult that serves no useful purpose and discussing a serious family problem that directly affects a marriage. While unnecessary comments can create avoidable resentment, honesty remains important when a relative's actions could damage the relationship or when a couple needs to agree on how to handle a difficult situation.
For husbands, the challenge is deciding how to respond when relatives speak negatively about their wives. Remaining silent may allow the behaviour to continue, while repeating every offensive remark may create conflict without resolving the underlying issue.
Abah's message encourages men to confront the problem at its source rather than transfer the hurt from one relationship to another. His emphasis is on defending one's wife and taking responsibility for managing family relationships instead of allowing negative comments to create a lasting divide.
Ultimately, his advice reflects the importance of respect, sound judgment and clear boundaries in marriage. How couples handle disagreements involving relatives can influence not only their relationship with each other but also the atmosphere within the wider family.
