Nollywood actress Irewole Olaniyan has rejected an allegation that she was involved in a long-term relationship with a married man, saying she stopped seeing him after discovering that he had a wife.
The actress was responding to accusations made by a woman identified as Maryam, who had alleged that Irewole had been involved with her husband.
Irewole said the situation began with just a few dates and insisted that she did not know the man was married when they met. According to her, one of those outings was captured on video and later posted by the restaurant they visited.
She explained that she did not see anything wrong with the video being made public because, at the time, she had no reason to believe she was dealing with a married man.
The actress said everything changed when she discovered the truth about his marital status. She maintained that she ended the relationship and had already done so before Maryam eventually contacted her.
Irewole said she explained the situation to Maryam during their private exchange and apologised to her. She also claimed she told the woman that her husband was not someone she wanted to be with.
According to the actress, however, the matter did not completely end there because the man allegedly continued trying to reach her.
She believes Maryam eventually became aware of his attempts to contact her again and decided to make the matter public.
Irewole also accused Maryam of repeatedly sending her messages, including threats to damage her reputation. She said the woman allegedly reminded her that she had a public image and could use the situation against her.
The actress further claimed that Maryam had previously connected her lifestyle with the allegations. She said her outings to restaurants with her actual partner had allegedly been interpreted by Maryam as evidence that she was involved with married men.
Irewole said she sometimes responded to the messages because she was frustrated by the situation and felt she was being deliberately targeted.
In her own words, the actress said:
"I am NOT with this said man and I HAVEN’T been with this man since I found out he was married. We had a few dates and a video of us on one of those dates was made and was posted by one of the restaurants, I had no issue because I wasn’t hiding and didn’t know he was married at the time. I believe Maryam found out about this restaurant date a year later, and I’m glad she found out, because I had left her husband even before she reached out to me and I did let her know that, when she reached out. I told her her man isn’t my type and apologized to her and she accepted the apology, even though she never agreed that I didn’t officially date the said man but that was the end of that. However, the said man wouldn’t stop reaching out to me and in his bid to continue reaching out to me recently, I believe Maryam found out and decided to put out her message to the world.
Maryam would be in my DM saying all sorts of things, threay tening and saying she’d tarnish my image because I have a public image. She’d always allude my lifestyle and eating in restaurants with my actual MAN to being with married men. On some days, I’ve been forced to respond to her, because I’m only human. One of which was my response to her yesterday when she made the post, there’s no handwork I’m showing her because I don’t want her husband & I don’t need him. I only responded to her because I felt she was doing this for clout and targeted me. She has always said she’d tarnish my image and she has tried to get what she wanted. I genuinely didn’t know he was married and I’d never had even gone on a date with him if I knew."
Irewole’s account differs from Maryam’s allegations about the nature and length of the relationship. While Maryam accused the actress of being involved with her husband for years, Irewole maintains that she did not knowingly date a married man and had already ended their contact after finding out he was married.
