Tyler Perry’s latest movie, Doing Life, is now streaming on Netflix after officially premiering on Friday, October 2, 2026.
Unlike the broad comedic stories often associated with some of Perry’s productions, the new film takes a more serious and emotional approach to storytelling. The urban drama explores redemption, economic hardship, love, family concerns and the difficult process of rebuilding a life after incarceration.
At the heart of the story are two people whose lives become unexpectedly connected by their past experiences and their desire for a fresh beginning.
A Story Of Survival And Redemption
Doing Life follows Anika Morrison, played by Naomi Baker, a single mother struggling to keep her life together while dealing with the pressures that come with raising a family and surviving financially.
Her journey takes an unexpected turn when she reconnects with Carousel White, portrayed by Jay Reeves.
Carousel is a reformed ex-convict who has served time but is determined to move beyond his past and establish a new future for himself. Despite the challenges that come with being a former inmate, he possesses talents and abilities that could help him create a different path.
However, starting over proves to be far more complicated than simply leaving prison behind.
Their Connection Began Behind Bars
The relationship between Anika and Carousel is rooted in an experience from their past.
Before their romantic relationship developed, Anika worked as a correctional officer. During a violent prison riot, Carousel played a crucial role in saving her life.
Years later, following his release from prison, the two unexpectedly cross paths again.
Their reunion eventually develops into a deeper relationship as they discover that their shared history has created a unique bond between them.
As they attempt to build a future together, both must confront the emotional and practical consequences of their past.
For Carousel, the challenge involves proving that he has genuinely changed and deserves another opportunity. For Anika, it means deciding whether she is prepared to embrace a relationship with someone whose history could bring complications into her already demanding life.
Family Opposition Adds Pressure
Their growing relationship does not receive immediate support from Anika’s family.
Her relatives remain hesitant about Carousel, with his criminal past becoming a major source of concern.
Their reservations place additional pressure on the couple as they try to determine whether their relationship can survive the doubts and judgments surrounding them.
The family conflict adds another layer to the film’s exploration of second chances, particularly the question of whether someone who has made serious mistakes should continue to be defined by those mistakes after serving their punishment.
A Focus On Second Chances
At its core, Doing Life examines what it means to rebuild after experiencing major setbacks.
Through Anika and Carousel, the movie looks at love as well as the realities of financial survival, family expectations and social reintegration.
Carousel’s journey is particularly important to the story because his release from prison does not automatically erase the difficulties associated with his past. He must navigate a society where trust can be difficult to regain while attempting to prove that his future does not have to resemble his past.
Anika, meanwhile, is forced to balance her responsibilities as a mother with her own desire for companionship and happiness.
Cast And Production
The movie was written, directed and produced by Tyler Perry, with Angi Bones and Tony L. Strickland also serving as producers.
Naomi Baker leads the cast as Anika Morrison, while Jay Reeves portrays Carousel White.
The supporting cast includes Tamberla Perry as Cathy, Karen Obilom as Trina, Jasmine Sargent as Lisa and Danielle Moné Truitt as Denise.
With its focus on love, forgiveness and rebuilding after hardship, Doing Life presents an emotional story about two people attempting to leave their past behind and embrace the possibility of a better future.
The film is currently available to stream on Netflix.
