Stella Damasus has opened up about an important chapter in Nollywood’s history, recalling the period when she, Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde and Genevieve Nnaji were widely regarded as three of the biggest female stars in the Nigerian film industry.

The actress reflected on the era during an interview with Pulse TV, discussing her journey in Nollywood and the intense comparisons that surrounded the leading actresses of her generation.

According to Damasus, the trio earned the unofficial title of Nollywood’s “Big Three” because of their popularity, talent and strong individual identities. She explained that each actress had her own style and approach to the profession rather than trying to imitate another star.

Damasus noted that their rise happened before social media became a major tool for measuring celebrity popularity. Unlike today, actors could not easily track their audience through followers, views, likes or online engagement.

She recalled that seeing their faces on movie posters and being recognised by members of the public were among the few ways they could appreciate the level of attention they were receiving.

The actress also described the competitive atmosphere that came with being placed alongside two other highly successful actresses. While the competition was not necessarily created by the stars themselves, fans often compared their performances and chose favourites.

Those comparisons, she explained, created an environment where each actress was determined to demonstrate that she deserved her position among the industry’s leading performers.

Damasus said the actresses were young, ambitious and committed to their craft, with success driven largely by their passion for acting rather than the pursuit of social media fame or financial rewards.

She began her acting career in the 1990s and gradually established herself as one of Nollywood’s recognised performers.

Her film credits include Breaking Point, Real Love, Behind Closed Doors, Dangerous Twins and The Widow.

Her work has also earned her recognition at several award ceremonies. In 2007, she won the Best Actress prize at the Nigeria Entertainment Awards. She later received another Best Actress honour at the Golden Icons Academy Movie Awards in 2012 for her performance in Two Brides and a Baby.

Beyond acting, Damasus has expanded her career into producing and filmmaking. She has remained active in the entertainment industry, appearing in both film and television projects.

Her more recent credits include the 2025 movie To Kill a Monkey and the 2026 animated series Iyanu: The War of Twin Princes.

Her latest comments offer a glimpse into an earlier era of Nollywood, when leading actresses built their reputations primarily through their performances, movie appearances and audience recognition rather than the digital metrics that dominate the entertainment industry today.
