Nigerian singer Timi Dakolo has advised young people to carefully consider their decision to move out of their parents’ homes, warning them against making such choices simply to keep up with their friends.
The musician shared the advice in a post on X, where he encouraged young people to resist the pressure to become independent before they are ready.
According to Timi Dakolo, the desire for freedom should not be the only reason for leaving home, particularly when the decision is influenced by what other people are doing.
He urged young people to avoid comparing their lives with those of their peers, stressing the importance of making personal decisions without allowing external expectations to dictate their choices.
In his post, the singer wrote, “No hurry leave your papa house because of peer pressure. Forget all that, ‘i don’t have freedom here’.”
His message highlights a common challenge among young adults, many of whom feel compelled to move out because their friends have started living independently.
For some, leaving home is viewed as a sign of maturity and success. However, Timi Dakolo’s advice suggests that independence should be approached with careful consideration rather than treated as a competition.
Moving out of a family home often comes with financial responsibilities, including paying rent, purchasing food, covering utility bills and managing other daily expenses.
Young people who make the decision without adequate preparation may find it difficult to cope with these obligations.
Beyond financial considerations, living independently also requires discipline, planning and the ability to handle responsibilities that parents may previously have managed.
Timi Dakolo’s comments encourage young people to assess their readiness before taking such a significant step, rather than making decisions based on the fear of missing out or appearing less successful than their friends.
His advice does not necessarily suggest that young adults should remain with their parents indefinitely. Instead, it emphasises the importance of understanding why they want to leave and ensuring they are prepared for the responsibilities that come with living alone.
The singer’s message has drawn attention to the pressures young Nigerians face as they navigate adulthood, financial independence and family expectations.
