Nigerian actress Damilola Adegbite has questioned the long-standing expectation that men should suppress their emotions, arguing that crying should not be something they feel pressured to hide.

For many men, showing sadness or breaking down in tears can come with the fear of being judged or seen as weak. From childhood, some are taught to remain tough, keep their feelings to themselves and avoid showing vulnerability, even when they are struggling emotionally.

Damilola disagrees with this expectation, saying she appreciates men who are comfortable enough to express their genuine feelings rather than pretend to be unaffected by difficult situations.

She questioned the origin of the belief that men should not cry, pointing out that tears are a natural part of being human.

In her words:

“How did we come up with this belief that men are not supposed to cry? I believe that if God did not expect men to cry, He would not have given them tear ducts. I do not subscribe to the idea that men should not cry. On the contrary, I actually love a man to allow himself to be vulnerable. To be human. To be sensitive enough to allow himself to express whatever honest feeling he has.”

Her position challenges the idea that masculinity should be measured by how well a man can conceal his emotions. Rather than expecting men to remain strong at all times, she believes they should be allowed to experience and express their feelings without embarrassment.

Crying can be a response to grief, disappointment, heartbreak, frustration or even overwhelming happiness. These emotions are not exclusive to women, and men experience them too. However, the pressure to appear tough can make some men reluctant to let others see when they are hurting.

That expectation can also make it difficult for men to speak openly about what they are going through. Some may choose silence because they fear being mocked, misunderstood or treated differently by the people around them.

Adegbite's comments offer a different perspective on what it means to be emotionally comfortable as a man. For her, vulnerability is not something that should automatically attract criticism. She appreciates a man who can be honest about his feelings instead of constantly trying to maintain an image of toughness.

Her statement also raises a simple question about how society teaches boys and men to deal with their emotions. If everyone experiences sadness and pain, why should expressing those feelings be considered unacceptable for one gender?

Allowing men to cry does not mean expecting them to abandon strength or responsibility. It means recognising that they can be strong and still have moments when they need to grieve, seek comfort or let their emotions out.

Damilola's view is that men should not have to hide an honest emotional response simply to meet society's expectations. She believes the ability to express feelings is part of being human, and men should have the same freedom to do so without shame.
