‘Talent Alone Doesn’t Determine Success In Nollywood’ – Tayo Faniran

 Nollywood actor Tayo Faniran has opened up about the challenges within Nigeria’s movie industry, arguing that success in the sector is influenced by factors beyond talent and hard work.

Faniran made the comments while speaking on TVC Entertainment News, where he drew a comparison between the politics of the Nigerian film industry and the wider political issues often discussed by citizens.

According to the actor, the problems experienced within Nollywood are even more pronounced than those seen in government and politics. 

He suggested that individuals working in the industry can face obstacles that have little to do with their ability, experience or professional efforts.

Faniran said he believes talent alone is not always enough to determine how far an actor, filmmaker or other industry professional can progress. 

Reflecting on his own career, he claimed that he would have reached a different level if opportunities in Nollywood were determined strictly by talent.

The actor also raised concerns about what he described as favouritism and rigging within the entertainment industry. He argued that some of the people who occupy prominent positions in Nollywood may not necessarily be the most talented individuals in their respective fields.

Faniran extended his criticism beyond acting to other areas of filmmaking, including directing and producing. He maintained that the same situation exists across different parts of the industry, with access to opportunities and recognition sometimes influenced by factors other than professional ability.

He further questioned the fairness of awards in Nollywood, alleging that the process is not always free from manipulation. 

His comments suggest that he believes the system of recognition within the industry deserves greater scrutiny, particularly when it comes to determining which professionals receive major honours.

The actor’s remarks highlight an ongoing conversation about competition, opportunity and recognition in Nigeria’s entertainment sector. 

Nollywood has grown significantly over the years, producing numerous actors, directors, producers and other creative professionals who have gained both local and international attention.

However, as the industry expands, questions about how opportunities are distributed and how professionals gain access to major productions continue to generate discussions among industry stakeholders.

Faniran’s comments add his voice to that conversation, particularly from the perspective of an actor who feels that professional talent should play a more decisive role in determining career progression.
