Grammy-winning Nigerian singer Temilade Openiyi, better known as Tems, has opened up about her early struggles with fame, revealing that becoming widely recognised was not something she was comfortable with despite her desire to succeed in music.
The singer made the revelation while speaking on an episode of The Boost Podcast, where she reflected on her journey from pursuing music away from the spotlight to becoming one of Nigeria’s most recognised contemporary artistes.
Tems explained that she initially wanted to make music without attracting the level of public attention that came with being a successful musician. According to her, she valued having a private life and was uncomfortable with the idea of being constantly recognised by fans and members of the public.
She said her discomfort with fame became evident whenever people recognised her in public, particularly at airports.
“I would go to the airport and people say, ‘You’re Tems.’ I will be like, ‘No, I’m not Tems.’ I was so afraid, I wanted to continue my secret life, and I was like, ‘God please, I don’t want to be in the spotlight,’” she said.
Tems Wanted A ‘Secret Life’
The singer’s comments offer an insight into a side of her career that fans may not often see, particularly because her rise to international recognition has placed her firmly in the public eye.
