Sophia Momodu, the mother of Davido’s first child, has opened up about the emotional challenges, social stigma and pressure she experienced after becoming pregnant for the Afrobeats superstar outside marriage.
Momodu shared her personal experience while speaking at Columbia University in the United States ahead of the United Nations General Assembly High-Level Week.
Reflecting on the period when she became pregnant, the mother of one explained that her situation was particularly difficult because of her upbringing. She revealed that she was raised as the daughter of a pastor and suddenly found herself dealing with public scrutiny after becoming pregnant for a globally recognised music star.
“I am a pastor’s daughter who got pregnant out of wedlock by a global superstar. And I was mocked. It was crázy. And I had to find my strength in the midst of all that.”
According to Momodu, the attention that came with being connected to a prominent entertainer often made it difficult for people to see her as an individual with her own experiences and identity.
She explained that although she became widely known because of her relationship with Davido, the public recognition did not necessarily translate into having a platform to express herself.
“And for the longest time, I didn’t have a voice. I was famous, I was popular, but I didn’t have a voice.”
Struggling Under Public Scrutiny
Momodu’s comments shed light on the challenges that can accompany sudden public attention, particularly for women whose personal lives become subjects of widespread discussion.
She recalled how the circumstances surrounding her pregnancy attracted mockery and judgment, leaving her to navigate the experience while also trying to establish her own identity.
The entrepreneur and mother said the constant attention surrounding her relationship with Davido sometimes overshadowed her individual story. Rather than being recognised solely for who she was, much of the public conversation centred on her connection to the singer and the circumstances surrounding the birth of their daughter.
For Momodu, finding her voice meant learning to speak about her experiences despite the expectations and opinions placed on her by society.
Advice to Stay Silent
The mother of one also recalled receiving advice from an aunt during that period to remain quiet about what she was going through.
According to Momodu, the advice reflected a broader societal expectation that Black women should endure certain experiences privately rather than discuss them publicly.
She suggested that silence was often presented as the appropriate response to difficult personal circumstances, even when those experiences had a significant emotional impact.
Her decision to speak openly about the experience years later represents a different approach, allowing her to tell her story from her own perspective rather than having others define it for her.
Sharing Her Story
Momodu’s appearance at Columbia University comes as she continues to speak about her experiences, motherhood and the challenges that have shaped her journey.
Her reflections also highlight the pressure faced by women who become publicly associated with highly successful personalities, particularly when their relationships and family lives attract intense media and social media attention.
By revisiting the period when she became pregnant out of wedlock, Momodu offered an insight into the personal struggles that existed behind the public attention.
While she acknowledged the recognition that came with being associated with a global superstar, she also emphasised that fame did not mean she automatically had a voice.
Her story, as shared at the university event, focused on the process of finding that voice and developing the confidence to speak about her experiences despite the judgment she faced.
