American music legend Lionel Richie has suffered another health setback after being diagnosed with atrial fibrillation (AFib), an irregular heart rhythm that has forced the singer to step away from the stage temporarily.
The 77-year-old singer’s latest medical emergency has led to the cancellation of three upcoming shows on his joint Sing a Song All Night Long tour with Earth, Wind & Fire.
The affected concerts were scheduled for September 26 in San Francisco, September 30 in Chicago, and October 2 in Columbus, Ohio.
Richie has since undergone an AFib ablation, a minimally invasive procedure commonly used to treat certain abnormal heart rhythms. According to his representative, the procedure was successful, and the veteran performer is currently recovering.
The latest development marks Richie’s third hospitalisation in recent months and comes less than a month after he was admitted to a hospital in St. Louis following a performance at The Muny on August 29.
Hospitalised After St. Louis Performance
Richie reportedly spent three days in the hospital following the August concert before being discharged on September 2.
At the time, he underwent medical examinations linked to concerns about his heart. Reports also indicated that the singer appeared to be unwell toward the end of his performance, raising concerns among fans.
The recent diagnosis has now provided further context to the health concerns surrounding the singer’s recent performances.
Despite the setbacks, Richie is expected to focus on his recovery before resuming his demanding touring schedule. His successful ablation procedure is being viewed as an important step in addressing the heart rhythm problem.
Previous Health Scare During June Concert
Richie’s latest hospitalisation follows another health scare earlier this year.
During a June performance in St. Paul, Minnesota, the singer told members of the audience that he was experiencing dizziness while performing.
“When you’re feeling dizzy, sit your ass down,” Richie told concertgoers at the time.
Following medical advice, the music star postponed two performances to allow himself time to recover.
He eventually returned to the stage on June 30 for a concert in Pittsburgh, continuing his run of performances before the more recent health complications emerged.
Tour Dates Affected
The cancellations mean fans in San Francisco, Chicago and Columbus will have to wait to see Richie and Earth, Wind & Fire perform together.
The Sing a Song All Night Long tour has brought the two legendary acts together for a series of performances, with Richie continuing to perform some of his biggest hits for audiences decades after establishing himself as one of music’s most recognizable voices.
