Nigerian rapper Odumodublvck has asked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to consider using government funds to provide financial support for artists in the country.
The rapper made the request while reacting to a post by Tinubu about his meeting with French businessman Vincent Bolloré in Paris. Bolloré has business interests that include media and entertainment, areas closely connected to Nigeria’s growing creative industry.
Odumodublvck used the opportunity to suggest a different kind of government intervention in the music industry. Rather than leaving young musicians to depend entirely on record labels and private investors, he wants the government to provide financial backing that could help artists get started and develop their careers.
In his words:
“Baba come give boys advance from government funds. Na you go be the biggest label boss. Because of you, artists no go fight their labels and underground artists go see something.
“Baba, come sign all of us. And I mean all of us.”
The rapper’s proposal centres on the financial difficulties many upcoming artists face before they are able to establish themselves. For musicians without strong industry connections or financial backing, recording music, promoting songs, producing videos and building an audience can be expensive.
He suggested that government support could give more artists an opportunity to enter the industry without having to rely completely on traditional record-label arrangements.
Odumodublvck also raised concerns about the relationship between Nigerian politicians and ordinary citizens. He questioned why some politicians who make promises about improving the country continue to keep their families abroad.
He said:
“God take any Politician wey go make Nigerians crai again, I travel abroad everytime and I see them with their families there. Their families don’t stay here, they’re all selfish, even the ones that’re just coming and promising us they’ll be better”
His comments touch on two separate issues: the funding challenges within Nigeria’s entertainment industry and his criticism of politicians over their connection to the realities faced by Nigerians.
For Odumodublvck, government involvement in the creative sector could extend beyond official programmes and events. He is calling for direct financial assistance to artists, including those who are still trying to find their footing in the industry.
The rapper’s appeal also reflects the wider role music and entertainment now play in Nigeria’s economy and international image. Nigerian artists have built large audiences both at home and abroad, while Afrobeats has become one of the country’s most visible cultural exports.
His message to Tinubu was therefore straightforward: provide young artists with the kind of financial support that could help them build sustainable careers, while giving lesser-known musicians a chance to participate in the industry.
