Nigerian singer Timaya has urged Nigerians to pay closer attention to the decisions they make during elections, saying voters need to look beyond whatever immediate benefit they may receive before casting their ballots.
Speaking during an interview on Wazobia FM, the singer focused on the effect political decisions can have on ordinary Nigerians long after election day has passed.
Timaya’s concern is that some voters may be tempted to focus on what they can get immediately rather than considering the kind of leadership and direction they want for the country over the next few years.
He argued that accepting something to meet an immediate need should not be allowed to determine a decision that could affect millions of people.
“Nobody is advising anybody. If what you want to eat today is what you are looking for to put in your pocket, that is your business. It is not just one day; it is another four years of hardship. If you know what is good, you have to vote right,” he said.
The singer also turned his attention to politicians who spend significant time outside Nigeria. He questioned how leaders who live abroad, while their families are also based there, can fully understand the everyday realities faced by people living in the country.
Timaya said his own experiences when travelling have allowed him to see how things operate in other countries, making him question why some Nigerian politicians choose to base their families abroad while continuing to hold political responsibilities at home.
“When I travel abroad, I see what is going on there. Do you understand? And these people themselves, they don’t even stay in Nigeria. They live abroad. They just work in Nigeria, these politicians, but they are based abroad because that’s where their families are. So how do you expect them to think right? They are selfish, all of them. Very selfish,” he said.
He also pointed to the promises that usually come with political office. According to him, Nigerians often hear assurances from politicians who are either trying to get into government or already occupying positions of power, with citizens left wondering what the next administration will actually bring.
For Timaya, the situation in the country has reached a point where many Nigerians are placing their hope in God. He prayed that anyone who could make life even more difficult for citizens would not have the opportunity to worsen the situation.
“You see the way God is trying to make everything possible now? We depend on God. If there is anybody who will make this country cry again, God should just take that person,” he said.
The singer went further, saying political leaders should not allow their personal interests or the needs of their families to take priority over the welfare of the wider population.
He stressed that the challenges facing Nigeria affect far more people than any individual politician or family, and that those entrusted with leadership should remember the millions of citizens depending on the country's progress.
“Because the cry of the country right now is bigger than just one person. May God k+ll that person. Your selfish interest cannot be bigger than, or your family’s selfish interest cannot be bigger than, millions of people in the country. No, man. At this point, it is bad,” he added.
Timaya’s comments ultimately centred on the importance of looking beyond immediate personal benefits and considering the wider consequences of political decisions on the country and its people.
