Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has stirred reactions after humorously claiming that he does not know some of Nigeria’s well-known entertainers, including music executive Don Jazzy, dancer Poco Lee and comedian Carter Efe.
The former president made the remarks during an appearance on comedian Isbae U’s podcast, Curiosity Made Me Ask, in an episode released on Saturday, September 19.
Known for its satirical and roast-style approach to interviews, the podcast put Obasanjo through a series of questions about personalities in Nigeria’s entertainment industry and beyond.
During the conversation, Isbae U asked the former president whether he was familiar with some of the entertainers known to younger Nigerians.
Obasanjo Names Entertainers He Doesn’t Know
The exchange began when Isbae U asked Obasanjo if he knew Carter Efe.
“Do you know Carter Efe?” the comedian asked.
“I don’t know,” Obasanjo replied.
Isbae U then mentioned Poco Lee and asked if the former president knew him.
“No,” Obasanjo responded.
The comedian continued by asking about Don Jazzy, one of Nigeria’s prominent music executives and the founder of Mavin Records.
“Do you know Don Jazzy?”
“Ha,” Obasanjo exclaimed in response.
The former president then suggested that the people known by the comedian were different from those familiar to him.
“So, you know people that… That I don’t know,” he said.
When Isbae U pointed out that the entertainers might know Obasanjo even if he did not know them, the former president responded with another joke.
“Ah, well, maybe because they no be important people, that’s why. That’s why the people you know, I don’t know,” he said.
The remark was delivered in the humorous spirit of the conversation, with Obasanjo contrasting the personalities mentioned by Isbae U with the prominent figures he has encountered during his public and international career.
Obasanjo Mentions Queen Elizabeth, King Charles
The conversation later turned to internationally recognised figures, with Obasanjo highlighting people he said he personally knew.
He referred to the late Queen Elizabeth II, recalling that he personally received her during her visit to Nigeria.
“Now I tell you, I know Queen Elizabeth. You say you don’t know Queen Elizabeth,” Obasanjo said.
He then asked Isbae U whether he knew King Charles III.
“I’ve heard of him,” the comedian replied.
“I know him,” Obasanjo stated.
The exchange provided another humorous contrast between the former president’s experiences and the comedian’s familiarity with contemporary entertainment personalities.
Banter Over International Audience
The discussion was also shaped by Isbae U’s comments about his international audience.
The comedian spoke about having viewers outside Nigeria, while Obasanjo teased him about having an international following despite not having travelled to countries such as the United Kingdom or the United States.
