Nigerian-American musician Jidenna has taken another step in his creative career by venturing into filmmaking with his first directorial project, KITA.
The short film tells the story of an elderly Nigerian technology entrepreneur living with a disability in a futuristic city. Having gradually withdrawn from society, the man unexpectedly develops a bond with a delivery robot that repeatedly crosses his path.
The unusual relationship becomes the centre of the story as the two characters gradually form a connection that changes the entrepreneur’s outlook on life.
KITA explores themes including loneliness, ageing, dignity and human connection. It also examines the complicated relationship between people and technology, showing how technological advancement can sometimes contribute to isolation while also creating opportunities for people to reconnect.
Jidenna was involved in several aspects of the production. Beyond directing the project, he wrote the story and provided its musical score.
The film was produced using a stop-motion style, giving the futuristic narrative a distinctive visual identity.
KITA forms part of Beyond the Loop Season 2, an anthology featuring original stories created by filmmakers experimenting with emerging creative technologies. The project is the fifth film released as part of the second season.
The film also received a screening at the Tribeca Festival, giving Jidenna an opportunity to present his work to an international audience and marking an important moment in his transition from music into filmmaking.
Although KITA represents his first experience as a director, Jidenna is not entirely new to acting. He previously appeared in the short film To End All Spells, giving him some experience working in front of the camera before moving behind it.
The entertainer remains widely recognised for his music, particularly his hit songs Classic Man and Bambi. Classic Man earned him a Grammy nomination in the Best Rap/Sung Performance category and helped establish him as one of the prominent Nigerian-American voices in contemporary music.
Jidenna has now added another creative discipline to his résumé. Reflecting on the development of his filmmaking interests, he said his journey began with imagining stories and scenes that he had not previously seen represented.
The singer described the project as another stage in his creative evolution, summarising the transition on social media with the phrase, “From Classic Man to Filmmaker.”
With KITA, Jidenna is expanding his artistic identity beyond music while exploring storytelling through film and new production techniques. The project could mark the beginning of a broader filmmaking chapter for the multi-talented entertainer.
