“If We Are Normal In This Country, Wike Should Be With The DSS By Now” — Justice Crack

Social media commentator Justice Crack has questioned why Nyesom Wike has not been invited by a security agency to explain his recent account of the political strategy used by the G-5 governors during the presidential election.

The FCT Minister recently explained that the group deliberately allowed Peter Obi to win in Edo and Cross River because they did not want the votes from those states to strengthen Atiku Abubakar’s position in the presidential contest.

Wike’s explanation has now raised a different question for Justice Crack, who wants to know whether the statement amounts to an admission of interference in the election.

Justice Crack argued that if Wike’s account is being interpreted as an admission that the G-5 governors deliberately worked to affect the distribution of votes for political reasons, then the matter should attract the attention of the relevant authorities.

“So, is Wike essentially telling Nigerians that he rigged the 2023 election, yet no security agency has invited him for questioning? if we are normal in this country wike should be with the DSS,” Justice Crack wrote.

The comment puts the spotlight on Wike’s description of what the G-5 governors were trying to achieve at the time. Rather than simply presenting their actions as a political disagreement within the Peoples Democratic Party, Wike’s account suggests that the governors were making calculated decisions about where votes should go and how those votes could affect Atiku’s chances.

The G-5 consisted of Wike and four other PDP governors who became openly opposed to the party’s presidential campaign under Atiku. Their disagreement with the party leadership became one of the major political developments surrounding the election.

Wike has continued to defend the position taken by the group, while his latest explanation provides more detail about how they viewed the contest and the interests they were trying to protect.

Justice Crack, however, is asking whether there is a point at which political strategy becomes something that should be investigated by the authorities.

His question is also directed at the lack of any known invitation to Wike over the statement. He wants to know why, if the minister’s comments are being understood as an admission of electoral interference, no security agency has asked him to explain exactly what he meant.

The exchange has therefore shifted attention from the political rivalry between Wike and Atiku to the wider question of how political actors operated during the election and whether their actions crossed any legal boundaries.
