Nigerian movie lovers will have another opportunity to experience Nollywood on the big screen at a reduced price as the country prepares for the 2026 edition of Nigeria Cinema Day.

The annual celebration is scheduled for Saturday, September 26, with participating cinemas offering tickets at a flat rate of N3,000.

The price represents an increase from last year’s N2,000 ticket but remains part of an initiative designed to make cinema-going more accessible to audiences across the country.

Organised by the Cinema Exhibitors Association of Nigeria, Nigeria Cinema Day gives movie enthusiasts the chance to visit cinemas at a discounted rate for one day.

Major cinema operators, including Filmhouse, Genesis, Silverbird and VIVA, are participating in this year’s edition, although the availability of individual movies will differ from one location to another.

With several Nollywood titles currently showing, audiences will have different genres to choose from, ranging from crime thrillers and psychological dramas to fantasy adventures and comedy.

One of the titles available to audiences is One Gidi Night, a thriller directed, written and produced by filmmaker James Abinibi.

The film takes place over a tense night in Lagos and examines how desperation and the struggle for survival can push an otherwise decent person towards difficult choices. Gabriel Afolayan, Uzor Arukwe, Idia Aisien and Wunmi Toriola lead the cast.

Another option is Invitation to Kill, a psychological drama and crime thriller directed by Chuks Obaze. The movie, which began its cinema run in Nigeria and Ghana on September 11, explores relationships affected by love, grief and betrayal while also touching on the possibility of redemption.

Its cast includes Kalu Ikeagwu, Greg Ojefua, Oma Iyasara, Tonia Chukwurah, Annabel Thaddeus and Efua Bona.

For viewers interested in stories around cybercrime and social pressures, 19 offers another choice.

The Tola Odunsi-written and directed thriller examines corruption, ambition and internet fraud through the experience of a young man whose financial struggles draw him into cybercrime.

Sola Sobowale, Bisola Aiyeola, Stan Nze, Deyemi Okanlawon, Boma Akpore and Tayo Faniran are among the actors featured.

Fans of Yoruba fantasy and epic storytelling can also consider Alahun: The Weaver. Directed by Dare Olaitan and produced by Kayode Kasum, the film is set in the fictional warrior kingdom of Irepewole.

Its central character is a young man born into a powerful warrior family who struggles to fit into a culture that expects him to embrace traditional ideas of masculinity. His preference for weaving and hairstyling instead sets him apart from those around him.

Comedy and family entertainment also feature through Sweet 16, directed by Willis Ikedum and produced by Wheels Pictures.

The film follows a wealthy, pampered young woman whose plans for the summer take an unexpected turn when she is tricked into spending her holiday in a village. Kalu Ikeagwu, Uche Jombo, Mercy Aigbe, Alexx Ekubo, Denrele Edun, Yemi Alade, Julius Agwu, Eronini and Angel Unigwe feature in the cast.

Beyond cinema screenings, September 26 will also feature a major outdoor event at Tafawa Balewa Square in Lagos.

Organisers of Black Market, a crime thriller directed by Fatimah Binta Gimsay, are targeting a Guinness World Record for the largest film screening at one venue. The existing record cited by the organisers is 43,000 people.

With discounted tickets and multiple titles available, Nigeria Cinema Day 2026 is set to bring audiences together for a day centred on local filmmaking and the cinema experience.
