For Asa Asika, Davido’s influence is difficult to measure simply by looking at his music career.
The talent manager, who has worked closely with the singer for years, described a level of influence that extends into business, advertising and popular culture. According to Asika, Davido has reached a point where his actions can attract enormous attention, while his ability to move past controversial moments has continued to surprise even people close to him.
Asika believes Davido’s position is unusual, particularly because of his age and the scale of his reach.
“Davido is probably the most influential person from Nigeria below the age of 40, in my opinion.
I say to him all the time, ‘You do know you’re kinda like the President of Nigeria?’”
The comparison, as Asika explained it, is less about politics and more about the sheer attention Davido commands. He said there have been moments when he expected a situation involving the singer to have serious consequences, only to see Davido move forward as though nothing had happened.
“There are some things I’ve seen Davido do, and I’d be like, if someone else did this, they would never get back from it. Sometimes I’m like, yeah, it’s over.
I don’t know how we’re going to bounce back from this. And everybody wakes up tomorrow morning, and they’re like, yeah, nothing happened.”
Beyond the public attention, Asika also spoke about the commercial value attached to having Davido associated with a brand.
He recalled receiving direct requests from companies that were not necessarily looking for a complicated campaign. Sometimes, they simply wanted the singer to appear with their product.
“I have emails from brands like, ‘I just want Davido to hold this bottle for 20 minutes or put it in his video.’”
That level of demand also says something about how companies view celebrity influence. For brands, having Davido casually interact with a product can itself become part of a marketing strategy.
Asika also gave an example from one of Davido’s previous endorsement deals, involving a Chinese phone company. He said the singer had a 10-year agreement with the company, but there were still some amusing complications around the phones he was expected to promote.
“He had a 10-year deal with a Chinese phone company, but he can’t even unlock their phone. They’d get angry whenever he held an iPhone, so anytime he did, they’d deduct money”.
The story offers a glimpse into the less visible side of celebrity endorsement deals, where even something as ordinary as being seen using another phone can have financial consequences.
For Asika, though, these experiences appear to form part of a much bigger picture. Davido’s career has grown into something that extends well beyond releasing songs and performing on stage. His name alone carries commercial value, and companies are willing to attach their products to his image because of the attention he commands.
His comments also underline the unusual position Davido occupies in Nigerian entertainment: a musician whose influence, according to the person managing his career, has become difficult to separate from the wider culture around him.
