Nollywood actor Wole Ojo has appealed to Nigerian filmmakers and producers to allow the Guinness World Record achieved by Black Market to stand rather than immediately attempting to break it.
Wole Ojo made the call after Black Market attracted thousands of moviegoers to Tafawa Balewa Square in Lagos for a special screening that has now been recognised by Guinness World Records.
Reacting to the achievement on social media, Wole Ojo urged Nigerian producers to celebrate the milestone instead of turning it into another competition.
He referenced the series of attempts to break records following Hilda Baci’s widely publicised cooking marathon in 2023.
The actor suggested that the film industry should give the latest achievement time to stand on its own instead of quickly beginning another round of record-breaking attempts.
The record-setting screening was held at Tafawa Balewa Square as part of activities marking the Lagos premiere of Black Market. Guinness World Records officially recognised an attendance figure of 51,000 people who remained at the venue for the duration of the screening.
The figure surpassed the previous record of 43,624 spectators, which was established in 2015 during a screening of the Filipino film Felix Manalo at the Philippine Arena.
While organisers reported that the total number of people present at Tafawa Balewa Square was higher, Guinness World Records used 51,000 as the qualifying attendance. This was based on the number of viewers who stayed from the beginning of the movie until the end.
The achievement has brought considerable attention to Black Market and its production team, while also adding another Guinness World Records milestone to Nigeria’s growing list of internationally recognised accomplishments.
Produced by Nora Awolowo and distributed by FilmOne Entertainment, Black Market is a crime thriller centred on market women who become involved in a cross-border smuggling operation.
The movie features several Nollywood stars, including Linda Ejiofor Suleiman, Omowunmi Dada, Scarlet Gomez, Teniola Aladese and Susan Pwajok.
The huge turnout at the screening has also highlighted the growing popularity of Nigerian cinema and the ability of Nollywood productions to attract large audiences outside traditional cinema spaces.
For Wole Ojo, however, the achievement should be appreciated rather than immediately challenged. His comments point to the wave of Guinness
World Records attempts that followed Hilda Baci’s successful cookathon, which attracted international attention and encouraged other Nigerians to pursue record-breaking feats.
With Black Market now recognised for having the largest attendance at a film screening in a single location, Wole Ojo wants the production team to enjoy the achievement without facing immediate competition from another Nigerian production.
His remarks have added a different perspective to the excitement surrounding the milestone, as the entertainment industry continues to celebrate the record and the attention it has brought to Nollywood.
The achievement has further placed Black Market, its cast and production team in the spotlight while showcasing the capacity of Nigerian filmmakers to create events capable of attracting massive public interest.
