A dispute has emerged between the family of late Black Panther actor Chadwick Boseman and his widow, Taylor Simone Ledward Boseman, over a documentary being developed to honour the actor’s life and career.
According to court documents cited in the report, Ledward Boseman is working with production company Words + Pictures on the project and is also seeking an agreement with Searchlight Pictures to produce the documentary.
The planned production has become part of a wider disagreement involving Boseman’s family. Ledward Boseman said the proposed deal with the production company was structured on a “Most Favored Nation” basis, which she described as a way of ensuring equal treatment for both sides of the family.
She alleged that identical documents were presented to the two sides but claimed that some members of Boseman’s family requested separate agreements from Words + Pictures.
Ledward Boseman also argued that she has made efforts to involve the actor’s relatives in projects connected to his legacy. She maintained that she has authority over the use and commercial benefit of Boseman’s name, image, voice, signature and likeness.
In her court filings, she further claimed that she had consistently attempted to consult members of the Boseman family about activities intended to preserve and honour the late actor’s legacy.
She alleged, however, that the same consideration had not always been extended to her by his relatives.
The disagreement over the documentary comes against the background of a separate legal dispute concerning Boseman’s estate.
The late actor’s brothers have reportedly asked for Ledward Boseman to be removed as administrator of the estate. Their complaint includes allegations concerning the handling and transparency of estate finances.
Ledward Boseman has rejected those allegations. She has maintained that she has fulfilled her responsibilities and gone beyond what was required in dealing with members of Boseman’s family.
She has also claimed that she provided some family members with financial benefits exceeding what she was legally required to give them.
The competing claims are currently part of an ongoing legal dispute. The source report did not state that a court had reached a final decision resolving the allegations between the parties.
Chadwick Boseman, who became internationally recognised for playing King T’Challa in Marvel’s Black Panther, died in 2020 after a private battle with colon cancer. His death prompted widespread tributes from fans, fellow actors and filmmakers around the world.
The proposed documentary would focus on his life and legacy, but the disagreement surrounding its production has now placed his family relationships and estate administration under additional legal scrutiny.
For now, the dispute remains unresolved, with Ledward Boseman defending her handling of Boseman’s legacy while members of his family continue to challenge aspects of her administration of his estate. Any final resolution will depend on the outcome of the ongoing legal proceedings.
